Let's use "Regression to the mean" as an analogy
Let's say that there are two polar opposites in attack:
Possession (Tiki Taka)<---------------------Mixed Passing----------------------->Direct (Percentages)
"Mixed Passing" is the mean
Good teams regress to the mean, no matter where they start
Limited teams stick to their polar position regardless
Barcelona might be the kings of Tiki Taka, but their goals can be quite direct, as they go forward and get a shot within 2-3 passes when they win the ball up high
Any team worth its salt will start at one end of the spectrum and evolve towards the mean. The mixed passing game is the ideal for a top team
Or in other words - "It's not the short ball or the long ball - it's the right ball at the right time"
As long as the intention is to play with skill and not rely on percentages, our shorter possessions, counter-attacking football, and addition of some direct play will stand you in good stead. If you only have a hammer, then every problem is a nail, as they say. Rinus Michels once said that defensive counter-attack is the easiest tactical style to develop, and it gets the most results quicker. We've already seen from last season that we (LFC) can build up possession and move into position in the attacking half with patient play. We've added defensive counter-attack this season too. We're getting the best of both worlds. It is a good evolution. When we can mix it up at will, then we will be even stronger.
In order to play that Tiki Taka, and win successfully and consistently, you have to have an abundance of 1v1 players to Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Neymar (we could probably throw Fabregas in there too)
Barca have a psychological advantage, but that's because of the skill of their players, and the fact they have three of the best attackers in the world, and possibly four. That's it, in a nutshell. Four of the best 1v1 players on the planet in one team. Nothing to do with Tiki Taka. Tiki Taka has another function, and it is because of it that these attacking 1v1 players get to do their work so effectively for 90 minutes.
