I don't think Xavi's past it. The problem is more with the system than with the players. The pressing is gone, the team is quite different from back when pep was here.
Xavi IS system
they call him Cerebro in Spain because of that...and that system is now gone because he has faded away, let´s not live in denial
he can still play big games but certainly not 50 games a season, more like 20 as full starter
he slows the play down too much because there is nobody to pass to,we are not even creating triangles anymore!!!
Xavi doesn't have bad games, He is the most consistent player i have ever seen, Him and messi to be exact, When you put xavi in the line-up, You'll get exactly what you expect, Nothing more, Nothing less.
Consistent in what this season? Aside from the Milan game his play has been pretty dull and uninspiring. He's consistent in terms of not being error prone and being an overall correct player but not anything more this season. He hasn't really showed that spark of genius with attack minded passes when we could use them, he's slowed down our play a lot, and many times just passes for the sake of it without purpose anymore.
I love Xavi but he is not having a good season. He's in a decline but I wouldn't say he's completely past it. He can bring the magic back but not as often as he used to and we can't be as dependent on him. Part of it is that he's suffering from Tito's current system where the team is complacent. I'm sure that if the team around him were to step up and start playing at full level then Xavi would be much much better, but still not at the level of his prime.
I do agree that Scheweinsteiger is currently better than Xavi. But Carrick, Gundogan? No, just no.I think that many midfielders are better than him actually.
Gundogan, Carrick, David Silva, Schweinsteiger...
