Xavi is still supremely talented but two areas of his game have declined. His willingness to try through balls which i think is psychological. A combination of not trusting the defense or even his own defensive abilities and becoming too obsessed with the idea of possession for possessions sake. The other is his ability to defend which was never amazing but he always put in work. Now he seems to just lack the physical ability to keep up with youngsters who are faster and stronger. Iniesta isn't a very good defender either so we get left with Busquets trying to do all the work and then our two cbs while our fullbacks are all the way up the pitch and it's no wonder our defense has been poor.
Fortunately for Spain, they have a much more defensively stable team with the double pivot and better back four so Xavi doesn't get exposed on counters.
