Well, we can't sell him without having a replacement lined up. Rakitic should be more of a squad player, definitely not Xavi's replacement. I'd buy Gundogan now and keep Xavi as our starting CM while Gundogan recovers.

Though it would be a risk, I would agree on this. And those of you calling Gundogan fat, do you guys have any idea about his injury? He can't exercise at all because of his back. Once he's healed, Lucho, being the fitness maniac he is, will get Ilkay back in shape.

No he's not a 90 minute player anymore, but he's important to Barca.

Are you seriously comparing a retired 73 year old Pele to Xavi? Maybe you shouldn't be evaluating how sensible posts are.

Please do point out where I called for Messi to be axed from the team after his poor performances.

Do you think Xavi should be a starting player for Barcelona in the biggest games?

No asking if you think he is a 90 min player.

Just like when we got owned several times last season and everyone blamed Messi when the whole team played like shit. Then you didn't care at all, you were too busy hating on Messi. Strange how care now when it's Xavi.

Messi playing like that in his mid-20s is/was a bit more concerning than a player who is expectedly declining because of age. Even so, I agree some were overreacting then too. But regardless, nobody here defending Xavi is saying that he can play 90 min every match, we know he can't. But I will not toss him to the side when he deserves to retire here, just like Puyol.

Replacement? For what he's doing nowadays we don't really need much... Get a good player and then adjust the system to suit the new midfield and things will improve...

Exactly..Rijkaard managed to win the CL without Xavi, I don't see why LE wouldn't be able to build a new team without him also.

The difference being that Puyol acknowledged the situation when he couldn't help the club, something Xavi seems reluctant to do...

As I said before, this situation reminds me way too much of Raúl...

Honestly, yes, if he's rested well enough I do believe he could start.

I also think it's important to have a level of seniority in the squad. We just lost Valdes and Puyol, so I'm completely against losing Xavi in the same season.

The Xavi discussion has been going on for months and it's always the same outcome. Xavi still has a role to play in Barça but his days as an undisputed starter should be history.

The issue most of you aren't understanding is whether xavi WILL ACCEPT playing a game for 60-70 mins even if he's a starter? That's the biggest problem. The guy always wants to play the full 90 no matter what. There's no way in hell we'll be competent next season if he plays so much.

I agree he has a role to play but he cant be relied on as a starter now and I dont think from the way he speaks that he wants to spend the last few years on the bench anywhere. When he could choose where to play almost anywhere in world and play almost every week.

Regardless if he's staying, the system needs to evolve and if he keeps frowning upon tactical variation, then what is his role here?

The ball is in Xavi's court now. There is no way he'll be an undisputed starter next season and rightly so. I hope he accepts the need for us to phase him out and that he agrees on a more limited role in terms of playing time, But I got this strange feeling that we'll see Xavi leaving which would be a pity.
