Are you seriously comparing a retired 73 year old Pele to Xavi? Maybe you shouldn't be evaluating how sensible posts are.

I was simply applying your logic and if it seems stupid to you then it's because of your own bias.. you implied that everyone criticising Xavi has a lack of respect for his prior achievements but these achievements have nothing to do with how he's playing right now.. if he deserves to be criticised, he should be

I mean sure, if he doesn't agree to a reduced role then he is free to leave, but we shouldn't just toss him out without giving him a choice.

No, there is a big difference in criticizing Xavi for being poor and saying that he should get axed from FCB based on his performance for a different team where literally every player on the pitch was terrible.

It will be difficult to phase him out, I think it might be better if he left so that the team can move on immediately. He is a Barca legend but we need big changes and his presence might be holding us back.

We have not handled this period well at all, there is a good chance that we could be without Xavi, Cesc and Thiago for next season and I bet nobody saw that coming a year ago. We couldn't choose between Cesc and Thiago, the latter was tired of waiting and now we are left with neither. Unbelievable incompetence from the board to get us to this position.

Do you think Xavi should be a starter for Barca?

I dont think those who are saying he no longer can are basing it solely on this game but this is further evidence that he most likely cant.

It was based on his performances on the last 2 and a half years with Barca, not on his performance for Spain. So I don't know why would you say that, especially after I had to read after the game against El Salvador how Messi and Alves were preventing Xavi from playing good for Spain.

No. He definitely shouldn't be a starter, he should have a secondary role.

Barca need to transition from Xavi, I don't support the idea of axing him without anyone proven to be capable of filling his position. I believe our approach should be to play him 20-30 games max in the next season.

He's still an asset to this team, not as he once was, but he can still be of use.

He looked what he is tonight ...an ageing , slow midfielder who's largely ineffective nowadays :(

I'm fine with him playing that amount of matches, but you can't expect a player that plays 20-30 games a season to be the one playing in important matches... It's like we suddenly turned to play Song Billong in CL semis...

His decrease in minutes, should be accompanied by a decrease in relevance...

He can play the copa del rey games for all i care if he is going to play like tonight, where is the leadership? where is passion? bah, one really good throughball other than that, invisible .

Xavi is like Pirlo... still quality but aging and lacking against physical sides. Due to his poor physique he can't do much in games where the midfield/team is being overrun, but if you give him a solid foundation (like Pirlo's at Juve/Italy) he's still useful.

Surely Lucho needs to talk to him once the WC is over. Hopefully, he can convince him to stay with a reduced amount of minutes.

Really silly what I'm reading here regarding Xavi vs Netherlands, as if his "defensive liability" had anything to do with the Dutch goals, which were all the result of fantastic long pass play and finishing by the Dutch or defensive errors (or a combination of both):

1. Left back crosses from touch to RVP, who hits a wonderful header. Great cross, great movement and finish by RVP. Defensive error: poor offsides trap.
2. Nearly identical: long cross again from left touch to Robben this time, who controls fantastically. Defensive error: Pique dives in.
3. Free kick from wide: Casillas blocked off the ball, ball drops in at the back post. Just one of those cross roulette garbage goals that go in sometimes.
4. RVP takes advantage of Casillas' horrible touch off a back pass. Entirely Casillas' fault.
5. Robben speeds past Ramos to collect a long outlet ball from the back, and brilliantly carries it all the way and finishes.

All the goals bypassed the midfield entirely.

All Xavi did was set up Costa twice (once for the penalty) and do his usual thing. Credit to the Dutch attack, which was excellent, but game could have easily gone the other way. This was by far the toughest Group Stage game on the schedule for the entire tournament, and it was a pleasure to see the technical ability of both teams, which will be sorely lacking in most other fixtures. With the exception of the shaky offsides trap, Spain looked quite sharp in the first half. The Dutch, despite their attacking display, showed they are also quite vulnerable in the back, and wouldn't be surprised to see Chile nick a draw or a win.

Though their defense is clearly vulnerable to world class attackers, reports of Spain's demise are greatly exaggerated.

I think it was by design. Van Gaal was spot on with his tactics. I was there and didn't see this horrible version of Xavi or Iniesta, that many are portrating here.
