The club has always had a wealth of talent in positions such as Attackers, Midfielders, and Defenders, but Goalkeepers have been our Achilles heel for many years.

I'm sure there are members on here that remember the struggles post Zubi era and it took years to find a suitable replacement and it happened to be Valdes even if he wasn't perfect. But the years before Valdes and after Zubi it was a graveyards worth of Goalkeepers that didn't work out in the end.

I don't understand why we struggle so much with Goal Keepers. Perhaps it's time to stop chasing the idea we need someone who's ballplaying skills outweigh the actual shot stopping aspect.
Maybe because you care more about ball playing skills than actual goalkeeping?

Should have bought Alisson from Roma.

Frankly I have very vivid memories of Zubi as a kid, most of them are from Spain NT games. I don't consider him that great, but a long time servant of the club in Cruyff era. Carles Busquets was the worst. Worse than Dutruel or the unremarkable Ruud Hesp. With Rustu Recber the club wasn't patient enough, he was a fantastic GK, prime age, that went to prove it once again with Turkey NT run in Euro 2008. It's a common issue with Turkish players failing to adapt abroad.

Barca never had a world class GK. I remember there was a point in 2002 when Buffon's name was in the media. I don't think that would have worked out as expected. Our style demands GKs who have foot technique. To that extent there was a period in MATS goalkeeping he wasn't using his arms, but feet to make saves.

With the kind of players we usually have, we don't even need ball playing GK that much. Just have one of the deep playing mids or best foot playing def fall back and take the ball from GK, who then develops ball further. Having great tiktok GK, is great bonus, but only, if he's also a great shot stopper and dominant protection for your goal. Should never ever be the main trait you look for, when fishing for new recreuit. Tek kas average ball playing skills, but i didn't feel he was much of a problem in distribution. His main flaw is that he's slow and can't sweep, although improved a bit on that aspect.

Hesp was actually pretty decent. Big lad too.

Just was part of the Louis Van Gaal Dutch takeover and never really got the local support.

Our suicidal back line never did him any favours either. Atrocious back line in that era.

Bogarde in defense in particular.

Baia in that 1996 team was a big disappointment too.

GK is very cheap in comparison to outfitted player while being one of the most important position. Don't know how the hell we failed to have a good GK on the bench all these years. When Jasper left we should have signed one immediately.

Barca wasn't that demanding from GK until Pep's era, and Buffon would have been a success anywhere at any time. The "Buffon wouldn't have succeeded here" is the Catalan version of 'can they do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke'.

Surprised some are trying to downplay his contribution.
Tek has personally and presence. That is huge for a goalkeeper. Look at Courtois, Allison and Martinez.
Liverpool were dire and should have been thrashed by PSG, instead Allison stood up and got them the win. Courtois won Madrid the CL twice and Martinez was huge in Argentinas world cup win.
All this stupid talk about passing the ball out and distribution. Fuck that shit. All the other clubs just get the best shot stopper available while we were just obsessed with a keeper who has good feet.
Thank God Flick has come in and some common sense has been restored.
Now for the love of God just get rid 9f that fraud Ter Stegen. I hate that cunt with a passion. I hope they extend Tek and sign a proper keeper. All those years watching that guy do nothing in the CL....let's end it.

Very cheap? Not really. The very best GKs went for pretty big amounts.

Again, barcaforum experts want legendary GK for peanuts. Or at least they think that's the way it should be.

Maybe not now, but historically it was.
Ter Stegen and Bravo were top 10 most expensive GK ever in 2014 at 12M deals. We signed lord Mathieu and Vermaelen cost us more.

Neuer is still a top 10 most expensive GK at 30M, Ederson at 40M is 5th most expensive and Kepa is still World record at 80M.

Compare it to Defenders, midfielders or attackers, they are by far the cheapest by some margin.

PS: No one mentioned legendary GK, we want a solid GK in comparison to other big clubs, while historically we were always at disadvantage in that position.

Correct. Now if you want to get the most talented GKs, you'll probaby have to pay a lot. Of course, it is better to pay 60-70M for Alisson than the same amount for Ferran Torres.

They usually do expect the very best standard. Otherwise Alisson, Ederson, Donnaruma etc are good GKs but not better or far better than Stegen, to warrant spending more.

So at the end of the day you have a Courtois and grandpa Neuer that could be included in the outstanding category. The rest have their own ups and downs when it comes to performances. Not long ago Alisson was dropping clangers every other week, now he's called best in the world.

A GK can have his moments, but won't drag a team to trophies if that team is mediocre or not up to standard. Hence why they are not as expensive as the rest of the outfield players.
