He wasn't bad. Well, for his "best of all time" standards maybe, but objectively not. Also you have to give credit to Madrid for that, they isolated our right side and forced us to play on the left, which was Neymar's side who obviously was shit.

Amazing enough that people wanted him out in the summer. He's always been our best CB (not counting Puyol) and a future captain.

That's the problem. As good as Mascherano is, he can't be trusted in either DM or CB against top opposition. Real still tried putting in some crosses but Mathieu easily coped with it, whereas Mascherano would have had huge problems.
