Of course the goal is not entirely on him, Mathieu and the defense fucked up and caught ball-watching first and foremost. That said, MAtS is a goalkeeper whose job is to make saves. Of course defense fucks up from time to time, if they don't we wouldn't be needing a goalkeeper. But MAtS could have done better therefore he is not 100% blameless either.

Ryu, if I am not mistaken you don't rate MAtS that high at all? Regardless of what some people say about him, Barca deserves one of the best goalkeepers in the world, does it not?

Bayern fans defending him only because he is German or you guys genuinely feel he is blameless since the beginning of the this season?

MAtS had a solid game today besides the goal, I felt. I am not liking how Suarez reacted to the goal, there is no place for that whatsoever in our dressing room. I hope Suarez had apologized and they had patched things up.

FYI, I don't like MatS because he was always stellar when he played against us, and I really couldn't give a fuck how his career goes cause one thing Germany has an abundance of is goal keepers. But I really don't understand all this scapegoating. Soon enough fans are gonna start to whistle and boo him in the stadium, and I hate to see that happen to any player.

Sure you can count the factors that affected that goal, but surely MatS is not the biggest. Maybe 10% of the fault was his, and that is solely because he trusted his team mate's abilities to clear the ball. He can't do nothing for the fact that Mathieu is an incompetent defender.

As I said, Barca's problems are deeper than this. It mostly has to do with poor squad planning before the ban kicked in. Sure you guys won the CL, and indirectly that affected your future not being entirely fucked up, but buying Mathieu and Vermallen was not a wise transfer policy.

From the looks of it Mathieu got fouled by Papadopolous, he was pinning him down while jumping over his back. Usually fouls get called for those but Mats had no jump at all which probably comes from his weak punch leading to a goal against Levante.

Look how low his fists are. He should be way above the jumpers head.

He's barely a foot off the ground here:

He had a solid game and I was very impressed with his passing. However... The ball is flying into his area ( the 6 yard box ) . I would expect him to make the call and attack the ball with confidence, but instead it appears he closed his eyes and went for a bizarre looking superman punch? He strikes me as a keeper who is not confident under high balls, and unfortunately his season is going from bad to worse. He has a long way to go before securing the number 1 spot.

Man, Mathieu could shoot the ball into his own net when facing the goal and trying to clear it and people would blame Mats for conceding because he didn't dive and save it.

I mean, he literally ducked and let his marker take a free header.

Far too many unrealistic and polarizing takes but the German has to command the box better...pity really as he has not helped his situation despite some nice reflex saves

And mats has made so many mistakes this season and yet people still defend him. When will the penny drop?

MatS for sure made mistakes, I don't deny it. However he's going in a period that his mistakes are coming together with a poor collective effort by the whole team which makes him worse than he's actually been. Personally I have seen only one positive sign so far this season and that has been Sergi Roberto. Vermaelen was kinda getting there too but that didn't last long.

True that certain members are always on the 'Team MatS', but you got to live with that. Fanboyism and blind hatred never dies in football community.

No, in real-time, that was definitely not a foul.
However, having MAtS close his eyes when trying to punch the ball certainly is not a smart thing to do. It is the natural reaction, but you can train stuff like that. In the fight biz, when you have your eyes closed when a punch comes, you WILL lose. And more than enough fighters do it anyways. It's the natural fear of getting smacked in the face. Still not a smart thing to do in such a situation. If you can't see the ball, how do you expect to punch it?

Well yes, I'm defending him because he's German and I know him well from his Bundesliga-days. If he weren't German, I would care less as tbh, I'm just emotionally not that invested in Barca, big surprise :p

The wording is too much regarding "how do I rate him". Do I think he is the best young gk around? No. Do I think he is one of the three best young gks? Dunno, not really, maybe? Do I think he is one of the best young gks with a lot of potential and great abilities that others at his age only rarely display? Absolutely. But just as he has certain abilities, he also has a few weaknesses. Those weaknesses were evident in the Bundesliga as well, but easily not as much exposed as he never really had a confidence issue there and the media left him alone while the fans supported him no matter what. According to kicker grades, he was always one of the most solid performers of all BL gks, with many peaks and only few rogue results to the negative. Obviously, he doesn't have those two things (no media backlash, unquestioned fan support) here, which surely has something to do with his current bad spell, although ofc it doesn't tell the whole story (language might still be another issue for instance).

He was passive, agreed that both Mathieu and maybe Suarez had a fault, but it's 4 m from the goal line, you can't be that out of position and have no fault in it

Wow, you guys are unbelievable. Ter Stegen's conceded goal? I mean, really? SO that goal doesn't count on the team, it only counts on ter Stegen's conceded goals tally? How the hell is he supposed to stop that shot when he has a defender that is actually supposed to stop the other guy from getting to the ball right in front of him?

Barca's problems go deeper than Ter Stegen. You guys are just looking for a scapegoat.
Lol, what? I don't really see a problem to have such a title because it was a understatement and nothing else. A goalie can either have a clean sheet or conced a goal and Ter Stegen was our keeper last night. I haven't even said whose fault it was, pretty strange from you to accuse me to make him a scapegoat. Especially when I've more or less defended MaTS in this thread.

But if I really have to give a comment about the situation, I would blame this on Mathieu and perhaps Suárez.

Yeah fair enough I'll learn to live with it. Don't get me wrong, if he turns out to be a great keeper and we can look back at this period as a blip it will be fantastic.
