Mostly because the two have been competitors for a long time going back years, but also there was something trivial: It was reported that back in 2009 when both Ter Stegen and Leno were selected to play for Germany U17 and were placed in the same hotel room, Ter Stegen went to bed early and Leno kept talking on the phone for a long time into the wee hours and that bothered the heck out of Ter Stegen and the two allegedly got into a fight, the two had to be separated and each was given his own hotel room in the end.

Also in 2014 Leno was reportedly not happy when Ter Stegen was selected ahead of him to play for Germany U21 and complained about it, he reportedly said like "Not being able to play (for Germany U21) makes me very disappointed, I really don't understand why. I am a starter who plays every 3-4 days unlike some other people".

You can sort of see from these that the two really were stone cold between them.

They are not friends. Everyone knows that. Heck, they even admit it themselves. Was kinda surprised the both of them were selected, given Löw places a lot of importance on team spirit and not having animosities in the squad. Especially as he's not short of other options.
