A player who is injury prone like Vermaelen tends to get muscle injuries most of the time, usually in the same leg too.
If I remember, Robben had all sorts of injuries.
Mourinho was pissed at him at Chelsea saying: lol, he is injured again?
He was prone to all sorts of injuries all the time, if I remember.
NOT AGAIN!!!! How is this possible? He is a goalkeeper! I have never seen a goalkeeper who gets injured 2 times in a month! Unbelievable!!!
Just one thing to consider, and I could be horribly wrong, but still...
What IF 99% of Gks usually only train goalkeeper skills on trainings, like saving shots, jumping, picking crosses and similar?
And they train distribution with feet and hands only as a minor/secondary skill?
And then, who knows what Mats (Neuer wannabe and a Gk who plays with feet almost as Xavi) is actually doing on training sessions?
He surely needed to learn and regularly train those skills (precise short and long passes with feet, lobbed passes etc).
Again, this is a wild guess and I could be totally wrong, but:
1. what if Mats does too much of those things (playing with feet, trying crosses, long balls and different type of passes) during training sessions and in his free time at his home/gym or whatever? So, maybe he is forcing this regime too much (to fit into Barca's: Gk who can play with feet philosophy)?
2. on the other hand, regular players like Cms and Cfs are playing with feet, passing, dribbling and similar all the time and their bodies (muscles in feet and ligaments in knees) are accustomed for these type of skills, movements and changes of a direction...
On the other hand, Gks who usually only run, jump, save shots, pick crosses and throw a ball with their hands for probably 99% of time during their training sessions and their careers, probably don't have thigh muscles and knee ligaments accustomed to long passes, crosses, dribbles, lobs and similar in the way how regular outfield players have.
People will probably reply: Gks train passing skills also, it shouldn't be from that.
I know.
But once again, we can't see what our players are doing during sessions and what are they doing at home during free time.
An analogy: imagine a skinny player (Neymar in the past) and coaches tell him to gain some muscles.
He can overdo them now (during one summer) if he is trying to get muscles too fast and thus, he can sustain some strange injuries because his body is not accustomed to such an intense amount of bodybuilding in a short period of time (while his regime may be a joke/very easy for someone who is lifting weights for 20 years).
So, if he is overdoing something for which he is not accustomed, he can easily sustain 100s of injuries.
About Mats, injuries could be just a bad luck.
He could be injury prone.
But he could also be a guy who is overdoing everything because he is too eager to claim a No1. He was frustrated with Bravo's situation, he was probably overdoing it even then, and now when we sold Bravo and bought Chillessen, I wouldn't be surprised if he was overdoing it (with passes, crosses, and classic footballing skills) to claim his No1 spot as soon as possible.
I mean, he needed to learn those passing and lobbing skills somewhere.
And who knows how those skills and movements of his body are clashing with thigh muscles, knee ligaments and ankles which were accustomed to 20 years of mostly only jumping, jumping, jumping and saving shots.
