I think I was one the first Mats fans in this forum(maybe the first one).
I remember people jumped all over me for preferring Stegen to Courtois in 2013.
And after 4.5 years you can see Stegen>Courtois

12 million was good for Gladbach at the time.

I believe Stegen,Bravo and Oblak hold the top three positions in regards to the most expensive Goalkeepers in Spanish history.

What's funny is Carvajal didn't actually save the goal, the ball went through his hand and in the ensuing scramble we still scored before the ref had the chance to blow his whistle...

The whole Madrid team didn't even protest or complain about the penalty call since they prefer the 50/50 than the 1 goal that would be counted if the ref didn't whistled first lol

I love this guy ...... I just feel as though he's gonna save everything...

I was kinda shocked when we let Bravo go and kept him ..... what do I know :)

He was one of the most expensive GK ever back then too. It wasn't a bargain back then

I think ter Stegen was 8th most expensive or something. Still had Toldo, Buffon, Neuer, de Gea, Handanovic and a couple of others ahead of him.

Lately you have transfers like Ederson for 40m which is a lot, but then again you have your GK for a decade as Ederson got the talent and mindset to be among the best in the World.

ter Stegen for 12m was a steal compared to that even if he had a year left on his deal. A team like Liverpool could easily pay a WR fee for him now. Arsenal too with Cech fading away and PSG struggling with their GKs. Juventus will have this problem very soon too as Sczescny is nothing more than a stop-gap.

Seem to have become a problem for top teams or aspiring top teams to sign long-term quality GKs which is why Chelsea are offering to pay Courtois a king's ransom to keep him.

Criticized ter Stegen a lot at the start of the season, mainly due to his struggles last season. It's crazy how he's gone from strength to strength this season and what he is displaying consistently. Every flaw or thing he struggled with seem to have disappeared. Perhaps it was just him adjusting after having to cope with irregular minutes for most of his time at Barca. His shot stopping and reflexes improved 10x.

Yes, but when you say "he is 12M signing" people forget how GK prices compared to others. After Calcio market downfall in 2001 there were few GK who passed 10M mark, b4 agreement for MATS only Neuer,De Gea, Handanović cost more.
He was expensive signing, and took him 3 years to reach elite level ()hopefully will sustain it) but right now it look like he is worth it.
Fact that prices got inflated make us lucky a bit with him, but doesn't make him a bargain IMO.

It was a bargain. It was the release clause, not the market price.

I always remember that De Bryune freekick that he scored against us, I really want to see if mats improved on his free kick saving.
