For a while they did, until Messi hit a bad patch of form and Ronaldo was showcasing himself, this struck doubts about Messi into the minds of people. However, when Messi hit form (notably in the classicos) those doubts were gone. If Ronaldo outshines Messi in the classico (with Real winning) the doubts about Messi would return.

With regards to the Ballon dor, Messi should win certainly win provided he avoids injury and wins the Champions League. I think Ronaldo is a great player and no doubt would be the wolrd number 1 were it not for Messi, but he is a Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan or an Eli Manning to Tom Brady. The gap between the two is Huge.

However I do think it's unfair to say he's all about goals and thats all he offers. He's not Gerd Muller in that respect, he is a decent dribble, albeit one dimensional dribbler, and he does have a ferocious shot. Where as a player like Beckham goes down in history as the best crosser of the ball ever, Ronaldo will go down as more than just a great goalscorer, he'll be remembered as a brilliant player with many great attributes, but he wont pierce the top 5 bracket, maybe not evem the top 10

Messi on the other hand is already above the likes of Ronaldo ( Brazil ), Puskas, Di Stefano, Zidane etc and provided he has another 3 or 4 great seasons, he will most likely surpass Pele and Maradona.

If Xavi/Iniesta, RVP, Zlatan or Ronaldo has a truly great Euros then they'll be up there. Especially if Zlatan got Sweden to the final or something to go with (probably) winning Serie A and having a decent CL run.
