Interviews with the 17-year-old Messi and Frank Rijkaard after he made his debut for the team on October 16 in 2004

He really hasn't changed that much. The same genuine smile as always. :)

If a player who broke

- Uefa Champions League scoring record (14)
- La Liga scoring record (50)
- Spanish scoring record (73)
- 39 year old European scoring record (73, Gerd Müller 67 in 1973)
- 87 year old World scoring record (73, Archie Stark 71 in 1925)
- 54 year old World scoring record for club+nt (82, Pele 77 in 1959)

, also having the most assists,

, loses to a player who was in La Liga winning team, there is something really wrong with the prize.

Sadly all the buzz about how Ronaldo should win the award (basically "just 'cause") will make him look favorable in voting I think. Team accomplishments shouldn't influence the award so much but they do.

Doobs

The Messiah
Apparently the voting system of the Ballon D'or makes Messi favourite to win, at least thats what a few Spanish football experts said.. So lets hope for the best..

Bilardo (excoach Argentina World Cup 1986/ The Argentina general manager ) "You have to see him in training and see him really take off," Bilardo told AS.

"He goes from 0-50 km/h in a second. The only way to stop him is to kick him. If you don't, you can't stop him.

"For him, the ball is like an extra bone in his body, and he runs with the ball as if he didn't even have it with him.

"Once he gets going, forget it, you won't catch him. You have to follow his footsteps before then because he'll beat you by 10 metres.

"He has unbelievable pace. He's at his best in the final third, he's unstoppable in that area of the pitch."

Barcelona plan to offer Argentinean attacker Lionel Messi (25) a renewal until 2018. His current contract expires in 2016. [rac1]

They should renew till 2022, at least.

I've heard somewhere in Spain you can't give a contract for longer than 5 years. That's probably why it will be until 2018 (signing the new contract after the winter break in January 2013 I suppose).

I know betting sites change based on who's betting what - but over here the favourite is Messi, followed by Iniesta and then Ronaldo.

It would be a crime IF Ronaldo won it, but then anyone who doesn't have RM/CR7 blinkered specs on will know that. You don't set all the records Messi did, score more, assist more, and even win more than your 'opponent' and end up not getting the vote over him. It's true that having the better impression and professionalism helps as well.

Whether he does get the award or not, the stats will show who the better player was, regardless of who's name is on the trophy.
