Lionel Messi Should Not Play For Barcelona Against Rubin Kazan - Johan Cruyff
Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff feels Lionel Messi should remain on the bench versus Rubin Kazan in the Champions League.
Barcelona’s legendary figure Johan Cruyff has claimed that Lionel Messi should not be risked in the Champions League away tie versus Rubin Kazan on Wednesday evening.
The Argentine attacker is still recovering from the ankle knock sustained versus Atletico Madrid last weekend, but has been included in coach Pep Guardiola’s squad for the match in Russia.
As a result, Cruyff doesn’t see the merits in fielding Messi in what could potentially be a difficult encounter for the Blaugrana, and in his weekly column in El Periodico de Catalunya, he remarked: “Right now we just want a quick recovery from Messi’s ankle injury.
“An injury that is not completely cured can give you problems not only in the game but throughout your career. The club can play and compete well without Messi against Rubin, and he should also not play Argentina’s friendly match against Japan. Neither match is fundamental to either team.
“It would endanger the health of the player for nothing, and for the dollars the Argentine FA would receive in return.”
Messi’s ankle sprain has healed on schedule, allowing Guardiola to include him in his 19-man squad.
