That's exactly the kind of smart run he has to do more of- when closed down on forward penetration, pull the ball back out of the pocket and go lateral. With Barça against Gijon, he kept trying to break through the parked bus, drew 3 defenders, and got stripped every time. He got his assist to Villa when he broke laterally out of the pocket and found Villa in the space that he had created by drawing defenders to him. With parked bus defenses, Messi, like Iniesta, needs to be a lateral running playmaker.
