Messi choked his three big chances. His first one was the worst because it was a decision making type of choke - He did the wrong thing and tried to be too cute and that happens when you are nervous or choking under the pressure - You try too hard. When you see the replay, it was clear Messi had a space to shoot into at the keepers near post but for some bizarre reason he tried a chip - It was quite stupid and you only do those sort of things when you are choking. Messi's second choke also came in the first half, and this one hasn't been talked about much, but it was another strange choke. He dribbled past the defence and made space for himself on his right foot and basically just chipped the ball weakly into the keepers hands - He had time to bring it onto his left or even dribble forward into the space, but instead he choked and his mind froze once again. His third choke was the one where he put the ball into the side netting when it was setup for him to chip the keeper. He chipped when chipping was the wrong option(first chance) and didn't chip when chipping was the right option(third chance). Basic decisions that he normally gets right, he got wrong in this match, and clearly the pressure got to him. It is one thing to have bad technique under pressure of a big game, but it is unforgiveable for a player of Messi's ability to make such bad and strange decisions under pressure when one on one with the goalkeeper.

I'm beginning to wonder if Messi has the mental strength to make Barcelona dominate the champions league the way we are capable of dominating. If Messi wasn't such a champions league choker, I think we could dominate the champions league the way Real Madrid did in the 50s and we could certainly become the first team to defend this trophy since the Milan team of the 80s. But until Messi sorts out his choking tendencies, we will not dominate the champions league the way we are capable of dominating, and we will simply dominate the league. Fans of other teams will laugh at our "Best team in history" label and call us overrated and they will be right to laugh at us unless and until we are one of the best teams in the history by winning 3 or 4 champions league trophies in a row. Right now, we are simply the best team in the history of the Spanish league, but to be one of the best teams in the history of all of football, we need to dominate the champions league the way we are dominating La Liga.
