I think the problem is that no one is scoring besides Messi. You can mark Messi with half your team without getting punished because no one else is clinical. Yesterday Messi didn't managed much in front of goal but he did give a couple of passes to possibly decide the game early but they were not scored (Tello, Xaxi, etc.)
and there lies the problem.

Because some of us appreciate his positive contribution to the team so much that the one or two bad touches he makes is irrelevant. Like someone already stated, he is behind EVERYTHING we do going forward, even when in "bad form". When was the last time Xavi made an assist and Iniesta for that matter? For the amount of knocks he gets in the name of tackes, I am very suprised how he manages to keep his cool. These are the kinds of attributes that makes it very hard for me to be critical of Messi. Yes, he could improve but so can the rest of the team.
Even when not in scoring form his passing is out of this world and the fact that he has so much respect and loyalty to the club.

Barcelona has like 15 wingers, 15 attacking midfielders, but only 2 "strikers" and one of them is out with a broken potato.

There's your problem. Mark the potato out of the remaining striker, and you're vsing a team of supports.

He is dropping SO deep to get the ball.. it is frustrating as hell... but also with him marked so much I guess it is the only way..

best player in the world and his best season.. what bad irony that his best season statistically could be his worst in titles..

He scored 4 against Valencia and 5 against Bayer Leverkusen not long after. That's his best form all year, goal-wise. But the Leverkusen game was on the 7th of March, and right NOW he's not in that good form. Why is it so hard to admit that as of now his form is bad?

the problem is not messi, guardiola is sticking with this 3cm line-up, u lose too much penetration and increase the burden on messi, because the defenders don't have to worry about wingers cutting inside, so they can just circle around messi, that's why if he wants to get a clean ball with space, he has to drop so deep, pep really needs to go back to the 4-3-3 formation that won us the cl and la liga las season.

Did anyone else happen to notice he went on that crazy goal scoring spree after being suspended for a match.. he needs to be subbbed in the 60th every now and then when a match is in our hands... rest is impotant to improving physically

Take D105 away from thread title - lose 2 consecutive games with Messi not scoring. Well done mods, well done.

On a more serious note: he played like a boss. But one does not simply partner the world's best player with a 20 year old B player and a fucking fullback upfront. No movement in the final third, no one creating space, no positional interchanges. Tello was repeating the same old trick, trying to outpace Arbeloa, running the ball out of play numerous times. Alves wasn't any less predictable playing upfront. Taking on the fullback - searching a sideway pass to Messi - done. Pepe and Ramos had absolutely nothing to do and could fully concentrate on Messi's movements. Until Sanchez came on: bang, goal!

Furthermore I think the false 9 system is getting found out. When we started playing it, CBs didn't know wheter to track Messi or to leave him to the DM. He created confusion inbetween the lines. Now teams are prepared for it and know what Messi is going to do. They keep the lines tight, block the passing channels to him and simply crowd him out, keeping him away from goal. He's not dropping extremely deep lately because he wants to play in midfield but because he's forced to do so by the other team's formation, otherwise he won't see anything of the ball, being surrounded by like 4 - 6 players all the time who are paying very close attention to him.

Guardiola's trying to change things but a 3 man backline is not the way forward. Bielsa is the master of 3 man backlines and even he found out (by not winning any of his first 6 games with his 3-1-3-3 formation with Athletic) that it can only fail against the default 4-2-3-1 formation that is being played in Spain. Why? Because 3-4-3 vs. 4-2-3-1 automatically means 3 defenders vs. 4 attackers. Busquets playing 2 positions and slotting into CB doesn't help at all. It just creates more room for Özil. I bet Özil was the happiest person on the planet yesterday when time and time again he saw Busquets running away from him to help out in defense. You can play a 3 man backline against Granada, Real Sociedad, Osasuna and all the other La Liga teams. No big deal. Because Barcelona has a € 600 million squad and other La Liga teams have a € 50 million squad. We could even play 2-5-3 because individually we are just so much better. But we can't do it against Real Madrid, currently the world's finest and most dangerous 4-2-3-1 counterattacking formation. Nor is this the answer against any other big team in the Champions League. So just give it up and find another solution.

Good post... Except that the D105 moniker was removed before the Chelsea match...

Agree with Barcelonista.

Leo's body language and facial expression is indicative of a player mentally and physically exhausted, but also one who's let down by his team mates.

He's the greatest of this generation. But there is only so much he can do himself all the time. It's a Team sport that calls for a collective effort. It's high time, those around him start taking more responsibility. Or we'll end with a trophyless 2012.
