This page is bugging me. I have been following Barca this whole season, so I know he has 20 assists, but the site says he has 18 OPTA assists ? :s

I'll have a look and see what I can find out on that, just think now how the spanish wiki give him 152 but OPTA is giving him 147, so we 2 of those extra 5 are from this season. Let me see if I can find a video of his 20 assists and see which ones look like they could be 'dodgy.'

Cool, but the other 3 is like finding a needle in a haystack. :)

Do you have a list of his 20 assists this season? Or a video?

True but I like having a 100% complete and accurate log of all his stats, which is why I'd like to finish that list of all Messi's goals and who assisted him on each. I'm guessing the creator of that site will get around to it eventually though.

Cheers mate figured it out. He has it recorded as 19 OPTA, he just hasn't added the Rayo game yet.

So that leaves 1 less which was his assists to Suarez against Altetico. http://www.lastminutegoals.org/barcelona-vs-atletico-madrid-la-liga/

Take a look at it closely, it clearly deflects off the defender. It is record on the list as (d) for deflection. According to OPTA its not an assists so Messi has 19 assists this season, not 20. This is where the world of assists becomes a bit contentious.

Now we just have to find the other 4!

There's a list in the statistics thread 1st page.

You have to look game by game, but it's there. Whoscored as the source.

Thanks I found what I was looking for, whoscored gave Messi the assist to Suarez against Atletico which appears to be incorrect.

Hmm .. I have been looking at the footage and I would still qualify it as an assist. It doesn't change direction, even though it deflects off the defender, so I would count it as an assist... God I hate these different criterias :p

Every site has given Messi that particular assist (squawka, soccerway, espn etc) so its not incorrect. Officially he has 20 assists so far this season.

'Some suggest that deflected passes should be given as assists, but no matter how good a player is it is unlikely that he intended to do so, so how does this constitute an intentional pass?' - See more at: http://www.optasports.com/news-area/blog-god-assist-me.aspx#sthash.gw8LUKqF.dpuf

The thing is you don't know how much power that deflection took off the ball, you can't be certain Suarez would have scored and if we don't count that as a deflected assist then how do we measure deflected assists? Whoscored gave it to him so I guess its not a big deal if you give it to him too but imo it's not quite an assist. :)

I'll have a look and see if I can figure out the other 4.

I'm saying its incorrect according to OPTA. If we are to use deflected passes as assists then we might as well give him the one to Sandro vs the yellow submarine too, again this all comes down to which assist criteria you use. Personally I like the criteria used by OPTA.

Every statsite has given him that assist and sites like whoscored and squawka also get their data from opta if i'm correct. Officially its recorded as an assist (the one to Sandro wasn't) everything else is irrellevant.

According to the OPTA website they don't count deflected shots, so if that is correct then its not an OPTA assist, unless it has to change direction significantly to be counted as an assist? I'll ask the creator of that site where exactly he gets his stats from.

Also I wouldn't say everything else is irrelevant, some other sites like to use wider assist stats which can be just as valid, I mean who's to say that the OPTA way is the right way? (although I do prefer it) Fifa used to use wider assist stats, which sites like transfermarket now use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assist_(football)
