He doesn't need to run like a headless chicken to be decisive. His role evolved, and how can he run, if he's always marked by 2 or 3? It's pointless, so he chooses when to make runs that will count to something.

I think he would prefer a front line of three work horses who don't score or assist but make good runs

Many people have made the comment that he probably realisies its inefficient for him to run because he will be tracked constantly. It is different to being man marked where you can keep on the move making your marker tired and hope he loses concentration. He is now essentially marked by two centre backs and three centre midfielders they work as a team. Before he would run into space and the players would get confused as to who follows him, now in the middle they all work as a team and track him. It is essentially pointless, if you watch he is constantly looking around waiting to see if he is being tracked if he isnt he will make a few yard to dash into space.

As for closing down, he has never fully done it and doesn't really need to do it except in the big games. I would prefer him to walk around then get the ball and score a goal or make an assist than for him to run around trying to find space and closing down only to not contribute.

Absolutely agree! You can't compare a player who's marked out of a game by 3, 4, 5 players with others who barely have the same focus. Its not the number of goals he scores, but its the circumstances under which he plays, scores, assists. Right now, and of all the players I've watched live, he's the best by a margin.

Ronaldo, Ribery and Zlatan all play 60+ games a year, but I don't see them walking around the pitch looking unsatisfied..
Zlatan is always walking around waiting for the ball

And the "Messi walks on the pitch" shiet is boring already. He's style changed and now he's playing more as a midfielder, which suits him. Running the whole game is stupid, the point is to be on the right place in the right moment. He cannot just move freely on the pitch as he is always marked by 2-3 players.

"looking unsatisfied"? What is this even supposed to mean? You cannot be serious with this one.

It's not Messi who they are marking with 4-5 players, it's the zone that they are covering. Even if Alexis were in Messi's position there would be 2 CB and 3 midfielders in that zone.

If Messi is having so much trouble getting free, they must put a player in front of him to occupy that zone, or put Messi on the right.

Messi can't produce his insane genius every time and it's more difficult vs the best teams. You're not gaining anything by moaning that Messi has no space.
