He was very good today. His dribbling and decision making were on point and of course had a marvellous free kick.

Stat I came across(which probably applies to just this season) - Messi scores once every 13 free kicks. Ronaldo scores once every 15.

I wonder is that good? We would need stats from the like of Juninho.

Don't know but his stats were definitely better last season. He had what 6-7 freekick goals? Definitely a better ratio than this season.

I liked the way he moved out to the right wing at times. The logic of having him in the centre is to have him involved as much as possible but the game can sometimes pass him by there when its too congested. By moving out to the right he can get on the ball and run at the defence.

Nice goal. Good game overall but his off the ball movement could still be better. I do not like it when he is stuck between the two CBs and does not try to make himself available or run to space for a pass. It be great if he had a true #9 in front of him or if he would shift to RW more often like he did today

Long time lurker here so bear with me. Not to make any fuss about the supposed 'decline' or lazyness of Messi some people have voiced, but he does seem to be entirely overqualified into a midfielder of playmaker type after his recent injury. He's never even near the front line when any of the counter attacks start and only makes runs towards/inside the box after a thorough buildup play has already been commenced and there is a clear chance of scoring. He never makes any 'real' dribbles anymore. I don't expect the Getafe type run from him at this age and tactical role anymore, but even in his last match, where he got that injury, he scored a goal after making an assertive run and quick one-two with Pedro. He never does even such short bursts anymore and when he tries he fails like against Almeria. He prefers to eye out his partners for through passes, which he does as good as he does scoring (probably the best player in the world at this skill too), but it does hinder the incredible asset of his, which is scoring goals, even in games where the whole team performs subpar.

I have a suspicion that either he really is afraid or unable to continue like he did in the past and the last injury was the final straw to trigger that realization (much like with Ronaldo R9 in his post Barca/Inter times) or he is indeed saving himself for the world cup. If the former, i wouldn't be overly angry about that even though i've been rooting for Barca since the mid 90s. I read time and again all these discussions and articles about how he could only live up to the title of The Greatest, when he leads his Argentina to golden statue and he himself must have been obsessed with this, so having a season ending injury (like Falcao) would be a tragedy for both him and the country at this point and one have to keep in mind that he is at his very peak/mature age right now. In the next world cup he will be 30.

Any thoughts on this?

I disagree. He was constantly dispossessed when on the ball and relatively inactive off it, hardly making himself available. Aside from a fantastic free-kick he snubbed every other chance he had. An unimpressive and unmotivated performance.

Messi's improvement in finishing over the years

Better conversion rate despite taking more shots every year, amazing. The best finishers are Messi, Higuain, Gomez and RvP. If this analysis could include shot location, it would be a great source of evidence for any striker/finisher debate.

I think I watched a different match. Messi was really active, changing a lot from rw to cf, always trying something. And that jump and header that ended up as puyol goal was also of notice.
