Messi is one of sport true icons, he will earn 10's of millions throughout his career in salary and sponsorship. Michael Schumacher was paid £20m a year at Mercedes when he was in his 40's just because he was Michael Schumacher, Tiger Woods is another and it will be the same with Messi.

He has had a so so year but still easily one of the best in Europe. I bet he is back to his best very soon, maybe even better and there is no reason to believe anything different.

Shorter contracts give players more bargaining power in relation to wages increasing.

The only way an athlete wants a shorter contract is if he feels his getting underpaid or underplayed, and wants a short contract to prove he's worth more or to leave for greener pastures.

In most other cases, athletes want the monetary security of a long contract. Messi is already being payed the most in the world, the smart course for him is to secure as many years under contract as possible, specially knowing that he can always look to renegotiate better terms down the road.

For every Ronaldinho there is a Ronaldo or a Ibrahimovic who have signed the biggest contracts of their careers at 28/29/30.

You really think Messis thought process was he is scared of declining and wants an extra year? Not a chance.

He sill be thinking shorter contract allows him more power to stay in line with spiralling wages world wide.

Top players back themselves.

You're just forgetting Messi doesn't really need a shorter contract to bargain or to have more power.

That's all fine and good, but you're assuming firstly, that the club will look to renew in 2016, and secondly that the club would be willing to up his wages. In the other hand, you'd have a guaranteed extra year on 20 million.

A gamble in one hand, a sure thing in the other. On top, there's no stipulation that would preclude Messi from negotiating his contract again in a few years, even with the extra year already secured.

Top players gamble and back themselves.

The closer a player is to the end of their contract always benefits the top players and not the club.

Find it unreal people are even arguing against that.

Messi is not sitting at home shitting himself about declining at 28.

Of course he does.

It gives him much more power in negotiations.

It's fairly simple.

One hand contract to 2018, 20M per year, possibility of renewing in 2015, 2016, or 2017.

Other hand, contract to 2019, 20M per year, STILL possibility of renewing in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.

Same situation really, just the second option you have a guaranteed extra year earning 20M.

In conclusion i can only say that thinking (or wanting) that Messi leave us.... is hallucinating, absurd, is a case for immediate admission in a psychiatric clinic lol

I agree. But if you understand castellano, check md or sport comments sections. You'll be appalled.

I dont understand why Messi had to address that honestly, saying that he'll leave if the fans dont want him. I guess they did really get to him

There were rumors he wanted to extend to 2019, but the club didn't. No way to know if true. This board can't go soon enough. I think it's clear a segment(faus) doesn't like him and probably do want to cash in on him.

If you think sequence by sequence, you will see Board is using social media platforms to create anti-Messi vibe among supporters. They know they can't sell Messi directly. but they can if they get the fans' approval.

Sport poll, TV3 repeated fake leaks(to harm his reputation), contract renewal not happening for 6-8 months, he saying board members know nothing about foorball and vice versa, it all adds up.He never had to talk like this before. Qatari agents would want him at some Qatari club, hence the repeated PSG & City links. They have to cover 600M as much as they can. It's an elaborate grand design. if the Board goes, this cold approach towards Messi will change otherwise expect more MD & Sport poll and anti-Messi campaigns.
