Messi has lost out in no way whatsoever in them not extending the contract - it suits him.

This was never about getting him on a longer deal or raising his fee it was about making him again the clear highest paid player in the squad as deserved to be both in his contract and his performances.

He was entitled to be the top paid player and to say to him 'we will make you the best paid player but first you have to extend or increase buy out' would have been sly and unfair on Messi.

They revised his previous contract more than looking to tie him down for longer.

Then why do you think he said that if people want him gone, he will go? He could be talking about the board, the fans or both. But I don't think he'd leave just because of the board.

He already said that kind of things earlier this year. I don't see anything wrong about it. It's normal that a player leaves when he doesn't feel appreciated but he wouldn't have renewed his contract if he doesn't feel that the fans still want him here. Furthermore, the ''fans'' who want him out are a huge minority.

Well he just signed a new contract so he clearly believes people still want him here - whether it be the board or supporters.

So for now he clearly knows people want him.

But if the rumour is true that Messi wanted to extend, which is speculation, then what reason did the board have to decline? It doesn't make sense. They signed Piqué on until 2019, signes MAtS until 2019, might as well have done the same with Messi.

But if the rumour is true that Messi wanted to extend, what reason did the board have to not do it?

In what way would extending the contract benefit Messi?

Where are the links to this rumour? Have not heard it before and I imagine like most people have read a lot about it these past few weeks.

You didn't answer my question. Why do you think he said he'd leave? He never did it in the past, it's a recent thing.

It's a hypothetical question, hence the "if". I don't see any logical reasoning that would explain why they would decide against it. And even if Messi did not ask for it, it doesn't make sense to not extend the deal. As I said, Piqué etc all got signed on until 2019, so it would be logical to do the same to Messi. And leaving all that aside, the fact that he talks about leaving after signing the contract does seem a little strange and would at least fit the theory of him wanting to extend.

He has said this exact thing in the past.

Go and look.

No, he never said "me voy" before. He used to say he loves the club and would stay as long as people want him, that his drea was to retire from european football in Barça. Now he's already contemplating moving, even if it's a remote possibility. It's different.

It'd benefit him as he'd have one more year with that 20m wage. Ending in 2018 it'd make a renewal one year earlier, and it could be with a cut in those wages.

He has said in the past he will stay as long as people want him and there is nothing in his words that suggest he is contemplating moving.

If Messi wants the to earn the maximum amount of wages he can it suits him for contract to end earlier. It gives him more bargaining power in what should be his peak years.

A longer contract under such favorable wage terms is better than a shorter one under the same terms.

Messi won't end this contract in his prime poised for a bigger payday. He'll finish the contract in the twilight of his career, poise for a likely paycut. One more year would have been a better deal for him.

No its not at all.

The top clubs generally look to negotiate with their top players within two years of their contract expiring. He will have more years ahead of him and be able to get a better deal or his next contract with a shorter contract.

The contract till 2018 suits him more than club.

If it benefits the club, then why wasn't it done? 2 other players got deals until 2019. Why not Messi?

Did you not even read what I said?

Its because they have revised Messis current contract to make him the highest paid player at club as he should always be. He is entitled to it and to expect him to increase length or buy out clause would not be fair on him.
