Messi's first half wasn't even bad, the majority is just overreacting. Seriously overreacting. If any other player gave that performance in the first half, he'd be praised for his efforts. Messi had several very good runs and dribbles that unfortunately didn't end in goals, but he was still involved and not half bad.

I don't get what's all the fuzz about. In the first half he wasn't performing well and it looked like continuation from this season in Barca. I was afraid that he won't make any impact.
Goal was amazing, but nevertheless he needs to be more eager when he doesn't have the ball. Calling people haters for having this opinion is madness and stupid.

Many were literally saying "he's finished" and that we should accept it. That's what's madness. It was a stupid meltdown. He does need to improve, but many here also need to tone down a bit.

This discussion has gone too far as well, time to move on.

I dont quite understand the critics, it was the first game, the coach had the wrong tactics and set-up in the first half, it affected the offensive play with only Aguero as an option to get the ball to. It was corrected in the second half and Argentina and Messi played much better. Argentina isnt a very strong team but they will get better than they showed in the first half and as a consequence Messi will play better. Sure he could have run more but he really need to save himself for thoose offensive rushes or they will not be as effective. He loost the ball a couple of times in the first half but slowly got into it and by the second half looked really dangerous with more options up front. Argentina will not win World cup but are good enough for Messi to have some really good performances yet so please wait with the critic.

What do you guys think of the idea of playing Messi in midfield in place of Xavi !!??

I've just seen this very suggestion in another Barca forum and I've copied and lasted it below ....

Maybe the the best course of action for the coming season, would be to move Messi to an Attacking Midfielder role, along side Iniesta, he is our leading assist front man...

He pass the ball with purpose at any given instant, and would open up various dimensions to our attack :

1 - He would occupy the middle of the park, there for markers would have to leave their zonal space if they would want to stop him, which would prove deadly since our three attackers would have a newly found space to operate in...

2 - Messi no longer will see eye to eye with 3 defenders under each touch of the ball

3 - We can now add a new striker/winger or even move one of Neymar Alexis, to their false 9 preferred positions...

4 - It will instantly change the dynamics of how Barcelona attacks, from passive passing to xavi, who sends diagonal balls that have become predictable in recent times, to a more direct approach, where the ball reaches the middle, and is on course to either finding the front men, or the back of the net....

5 - it will put an end to the Messi dependency glitch we have become accustomed to seeing....

Someone will say he doesn't defend enough to play in midfield.

That's really good thinking in terms of drawing defenders out and opening up space, but what about work rate required for a midfielder? I don't see Leo doing much defensive work at all as it is or stepping up his distance either. On paper it sounds nice, but putting that into practice would be difficult.

For that to work, and it could be a plan b, it'd have to be like this, imo:

-------Busi------Masche------
-----------Messi--------------
Deulo-----Alexis-----Neymar

I've always wondered why we've never tried this other than like 2 matches in the past 3 years. It's been CLEAR that Messi would greatly benefit from someone in front of him pinning back the CBs. I honestly believe if Messi had a proper finisher ahead of him, he'd lead Europe in assists every season.

That formation might see some play this year depending on situation. Rafinha instead of Deulo though.

Not a fan of Alexis as a 9, unless they'll have him moving around so he is not really a 9 but a drifting in and out of the position.
