9 rating is rubbish either way you look at it.

All rating sites should be taken with a pinch of salt. Whoscored put big weight on goals and assists and at the same time don't put much negative weight on a few misplaced passes.

I'd give Messi a 5-6/10 tonight.

You don't just get a 9 for an assist. Dribbles, passes, touches, shots along with the defensive stats all taken into account. I'd say he was 8 out of 10 today. His dribbles is what pushed him up into the 9's today.

That's too harsh. His biggest problem today was sloppiness both with his passing and first touch. He still was the most incisive player on the field and the one who kept trying to break the bus with direct play. He succeeded plenty too, even if he also failed as much because of how tight and compact APOEL were defending.

You need players to take risks against buses, even if they will fail. Playing it safe gets no results.

Though that being said, he was uncharacteristically sloppy today yes. I'd give him at least a 7.

I'm not worried about him not scoring but about the fact that he looked a little sloppy with passes and stuff. Again hopefully its just a bad day.

With Suarez and a Neymar who has improved, the goalscoring burden he had will be shared. I don't expect him to score as much as he used to because he won't have to do it all by himself anymore.

His assists tally will shoot up though.

Ronaldo has more champions league goals than Messi. But Messi has got 68 in 89 whereas Ronaldo has 69 in 110.

Messi had a poor game after a long time. No, it was not poor compared to his ridiculous standard, it was a poor game for any player. Lost the ball so many times. BUT, it doesn't matter. This is the LAST thing anybody here should be concerned about. Seriously. He has these games once a season probably..So I couldn't be less worried.

He created six chances, more than any other player in any other game in the CL opening game, that isn't poor for any player. That is amazing for some players

Are these just stats from some website? Because that might seem like a good number, but I watched the game, and surely don't remember him making 6 good chances. Stats can be real misleading at times, a good example are those passes that go awry and get counted as shots on target. I think most people who saw the game would agree he was poor, misplaced numerous passes, failed dribbles, blocked shots. So I'm pretty sure that stat is meaningless in this game. Heck, I can't even remember us having 6 good chances in the entire game.

Yeah most chances were average, still, i think he was trying things which at least is better than some of the players. i prefer he tries and messes up passes than just walking around.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not blaming/questioning him here at all  I just think he had a bad game but there's nothing more to it that people need to discuss

In both of our last 2 games in LaLiga we had a tough time and it was emotioanl and sterssful for players but they made it.
In case you forgot our every player and coach have something to prove and having a tough la liga match fixtures ahead they played with 50 percent at best and very sloppy, why ? Because it doesnt matter.
Leo played amazing couple of games and dont expect him to score a bunch of goals because it isnt all up to him anymore and due to xavi/iniesta decline someone had to cover for that and he took the job,he has matured so much as a player.
He will keep growing as season keep going,im liking it so far very very much.
