Doesn't make sense to sell him a year before(or the same year as) elections though.

With this board, we never know. They are not making sure the best player Barça ever had is feeling at home and 100% happy. If they get re-elected in 2016, I can see Messi leaving.

Real Madrid or Bayern.

bayern's most expensive purchase ever was javi martinez (40 mil. €). and there is a statement from rummenigge where he said that no player is worth more than 50. so i think that they won't go for messi, even if there was a chance. besides, i think messi would be transferred for 100 mil. €, maybe 120.

lol this is what the board was expecting to hear from him. If the board doesn't say asap that they would never sell the best player in history , then they dun goofed really good. If Messi would leave , it will be for around 150-170 m. Would expect something even less considering this board. Don't know how I could watch Barca games for a while considering what the board would have done.

Messi won't leave. If the board won't prevent him then his team mates and Laporta will. Doesn't make sense to leave 1 year before an election that could possibly change everything.

Only because we currently have the worst negotiators in history. Whether it be transfer fees or shirt sponsorship.

Actually, it makes more sense now. Remember this is not about logic or sentiments, but politics. All the board needs to do is create dissatisfaction about Messi, check. Unsettle the player, check. All they have left is to create a plan to reinvest the money, Reus, Koke, new stadium, and then convince a good amount of board members that this is the right thing to do for the club, that the club is bigger than just one player, and it could happen.

All you who are thinking this could never happen are being a little naive. Granted it is a long shot, but these fuckers leading the club are politicians and businessmen, and crooked to boot. They don't necessarily think with passion and logic, but with power and politics.

You are probably right about how the board thinks. But the question is, will this board get re-elected if they do this? I very much doubt they will be re-elected as things are already, let alone if they were to sell Messi

Barca and Messi are two different things, a club of course is more important than a player, but its all about keeping your star players happy

Yes, club is more important, but Leo is integral part of it. Letting him go is in long term economic failure.
I really hope these are just yellow pages, otherwise it's a major alarm.

Well not really, selling Messi would be the right choice economically, since not only will he cover alot of our Debt we won't have to pay his wages anymore.

On the expense of our sporting project. Barca is not broke or going down so it doesn't make sense either financially or from a sporting aspect. It might pay for the stadium and save up money, but then don't expect the sponsors to put forward the same numbers for us again because the overall package would be weaker without a Lionel Messi in it.

Yep, sadly these are common business protocols. I already miss Laporta.

They could very well use Messi to spin things in their favor. Elections are about politics more than anything. Create enough animosity towards Messi among the socis, paint them an unsettled and unhappy player wanting to leave, and give them a plan to reinvest the transfer money in exciting young talents like Reus, Koke, and a new Camp Nou, with increased revenues for everyone, with good political machinations, and they'll convince a good many of them.

This is all speculatory of course, but to dismiss it entirely as "they'd be crazy to do it" is being a bit naive when other interests are at hand, and power and politics are in play.

I don't think Messi is the kind to bail out, but that interview he gave kinda gave me the feeling that he would want to see new horizons, which would be pretty stupid seeing that the transfer ban is not long and things will imprpve once they elect a new board.

You're forgetting sponsors and huge amount of supporters. Many of them came just because of this little magician. Having the GOAT in your backyard means something.
