Cassano is a huge Messi fan, I think he even named his son after him.
He is wrong about Messi getting battered more though. Serie A back then and football in general favoured butchers more and Maradona got the shit kicked out of him with Felipe Luis tackles on a weekly basis.

The tackles are not as bad now and I agree Cassano is wrong there, but the game IS more physical. In Maradona's time, smokers could be the best football players if they wanted. Players now, at a minimum, have to be ridiculously fit to have any chance of succeeding.

I don't have the numbers, so it would be interesting to compare distance run by teams over the past 2-3 decades.
