Actual performances don't count anymore, what it really matters is winning trophies with the right name behind the football shirt.
Messi, as always, performed way better by a pure football level in 2016 than Cristiano Ronaldo (or everyone else), who had an average season full of pumped stats, and always looked very bad on the pitch when he didn't score. But Cristiano Ronaldo won CL and Euro, so, no matter what Messi will do, best player awards will be his.
In a perfect world, people would notice that Cristiano Ronaldo's all around contribution to those wins has been absolutely sub-par (worst man on the pitch in the CL final (as always, since almost in every single CL final he has been shit) and a not even played Euro final), but since MONEY is what really matters he will be the one who will get the "best player in the world" awards, even if everybody with a functioning brain can notice this is far from being the truth.
This shit will go on until both Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi retire, since this so called comparison between the two (non existent in reality, since Messi is a much better overall football player and everyone with a neutral mind can see it) is a tremendous money cow to be milked as much and as far as possible.
So, still expect a lot more shit to happen in the near future.
