But you can. RM won many games doing exactly that. Had Portugal managed to pull it off, you would talk differently. You would say against Uruguay: you cannot count that defence can manage to defend against all the crosses coming in for 90 minutes.

RM is not just doing that, they have good midfielder who can create some good passes into the box not just some wide crosses, they rely on crosses sure but not as heavy as Portugal. Yes the opponent matters here, they are specialists in defending crosses.

No they didnt.

Uruguay scored and defended in the penalty box.

It is like folk claiming Atletico were lucky to win when do the same.

Portugal could barely break them down and Uruguay were the better side.

This game was extremely similar to the 2014 CL Final, where Atletico were getting absolutely ran down and desperately defending till the end. Only difference is the header from Ramos.

The case is the same, both teams were defending last ditch trying to wait out the clock and looked like they were about to concede for long periods of time. Portugal pressed them into so many errors and forced the defenders into last ditch defending, where Uruguay did succeed.

If you actually look at their careers without fetishising the World Cup you would see that Messi has far surpassed Maradonna a long time ago, more trophies, much better stats and a lot more years at the top

Of course, i am not refuting that. But for people who criticize messi this is the thought process. I am expecting it to change after he retires. I don't know about maradona and pele but for me messi is the best i have seen.

The end seem near. I just don't seem him having the fight for more battles. But the bigger battles , in CL, Copa America etc. I just think it's kinda done. Hopefully he can learn a deeper role like Pirlo where he dictates the play.

Also let's hope he can win a few more La Liga because it is important for Barca to catch Madrid league title record and become the best team ever in Spain. THat's the ultimate goal.

No player is bigger than the club.

True in club football where teams like Madrid are much better drilled. Even then, Madrid rode their luck big time in CL exactly with this approach, two times vs Bayern. In NT football, this seems to be the best approach. Being compact and playing on the counter on fast breaks.

No it wasnt and doesnt matter anyway as Atletico did not defend that game well enough to see out result.

Uruguay did and Portugal had no answers how to break through.

Portugal were not a 'balanced side' in a single game this WC.

They saw out game like Atletico have done and won on countless ocassions.

I really don’t understand this speculations? Why would he retire from NT? There is still 2019 Copa next year and he can for sure play in 2022, he won’t be as good as he is today but Argentina might be much better team than they are now so why wouldn't he try again? It would be a HUGE mistake to retire again!

But Uruguay did defend the crosses as they set out to.

Real Madrid games are irrelevant.

They conceded goal from the corner. So defence has failed. It could have failed one more time easily.
Every time you make a cross, ball is out of the control and anything can happen.

No they succeeded as scored twice so conceding once was enough to go through.

Uruguay were better side and defended well and Portugal did not have enough ideas to break them down.

They Atletico Madrided them.
