in regards to that sport article, i'm going to try and make some points here that might not be well received (and are probably hindsight 20/20). so we were one of the top teams in europe when rijkaard won the CL, but it was really in pep's treble year that we became THE top team. at that time united were our closest rivals and madrid was not even close (8-2 in aggregate score in the clasicos that season). immediately that summer, floper brought in cristiano and kaka, and followed that up with good players like xabi, ozil, di maria on top of their young core of ramos marcelo pepe and co. while we laughed at the "galactico" signings, the truth is that the only reason real was so devoid of success in the pep years was because our team was all time great level. so what we have is madrid in the span of 1-2 years jumping from avg-above avg to vying for CL semi finals on a regular basis and finally breaking through in 13/14 and not looking back since (well you could discount the fluke 15/16 CL). they've kept adding good player after anotheer each summer (a RB of carvajal's quality, asensio, kovacic for the future). at the same time, they've sold/discarded smartly and are probably better than us in terms of net spend. they may treat their legends like trash but they are ruthless (like FIFA and UEFA) and unfortunately that is what it takes for success in this world and in football. i will also say they've learnt a lot from the ingredients that made us so successful (bombastic full backs, strong technical midfield) and tried to cover for the issues that have contributed to our decline since pep's last year, outside of that brilliant 2015 thanks to MSN. the only things in our favor last 4-5 years have been messi's great consistency (ensuring us liga dominance atleast) and the fact that madrid simply won't be able to buy or produce players of messi xavi iniesta caliber to go down as a legendary side. regardless, floper has outdone the barca board who have served us nothing but dross like arda, gomez, song (wtf), vermaelen (wtf), douglas (wtf x 2) over the years.

my only (slight) consolation is that bayern's board has managed to outdo ours in this regard, they got arrogant and complacent/cute after only 1 CL and keep harkening back for 33-34 yr old robbery to save them.

One of the biggest regrets when he retires, except that we will not have any Messi in team, is that we couldn't won more UCLs...I mean it was the best period in our history, ok we won 4 in 10 years, not bad I would say, but man, we could have done much more, just when you see what exceptional players we had...2010 and 2012 could have been easily won, just missed some luck..If we had just half of Real's these days...

Oh well, we should think to future not past and now the board should just rebuild for future, but they are so dumb, can.t understand why.

Come on. With Messi we have won 4 CLs, 3 with him as a key player. And we didn't just win them. We won them dominating our rivals like few teams in history. And 6 Liga's in 8 years, don't leave that part out.

He needs to win at least 1 more CL to match Maldini with 5.

He will. But it's overly simplistic to only look at CL titles. There is also La Liga. A very important part in deciding domination.

Cl is the Gold standard nowadays.

People judge a team or era by how many Classes you have won.

It's a shame we didn't win at least one of 2010 or 2012.

We were very unlucky both times.

If we hadn't had that unbeaten streak last season I think we may have had a chance.

I don't think that's true. For example on redcafe, users are extremely amused by Madrid's 1 title in 8 years in La Liga. There will always be CL fanatics who think that, but most real football fans have a broader perspective, and understand you can't really dominate when you manage to be the best team in your country only one time in 8 years.
