10 - Lionel Messi - v5

Jesus christ, what more do people want Messi to do? There was a play where 5 or 6 Venezuela chased him and he was still able to get a shot off

Or the play when Messi dribbled past 2 or 3 oponents then passed the ball to a teammated into space only for that teammate to immediately loose the ball. Such a thing rarely happens at Barcelona even when barça is not at their best.

Wasnt it always just one guy having a vendetta against Messi in the press?
People dont even watch games they look at results. Messi vs Ronaldo era has put the emphasis on stats andvresults over actual play.
People see 1-1 argentina fail -> messi sucks, maradona would have made them win it! If he actually played crappy but scored the 1-0 it would be: Messi leading Argentina towards wc.
It simplified and commercialised just for click bait titles and to push a certain narrative. Sucks for Messi since he is one of the few footballers who is better than his stats whould imply.

Exactly. It ultimately brought the Messi-Ronaldo fanboys tribalism and how everything judged on their goals galore. Even stats obssessed fanboys simply do not a shit about chances created and the likes, as long as goals aren't scored or there are no direct assists. Even then, Neymar fanboys seemed to appreciate Neymar's better dribbling and chances created stats and again Messi is being "helped" and blamed.

One would think Messi and Ronaldo could "carry" teams alone without any help. Tats bs. Even then Ronaldo and Messi plays an entirely different playstyle; Ronaldo thrived in a more fluid counter attacking Madrid and Portugal, which depended on the defence of teammates and the leading of counter attack, to bring and cross the ball to Ronaldo. Messi depended on a more complex system of tiki taka, but such risky and offensive system simply requires very technical players and teammates. Messi couldn't do that alone. Even though the notion of carrying teams single-handedly isn't quite imposssible in Messi's books. Messi vs Bayern 2015, Messi vs Madrid 2017. I have never seen anyone creates so much and scores so many at the same time, not to mention his stellar dribbbling.

Even then I would to believe Messi could thrive equally in systems like Real Madrid and Portugal, where he is freed of his defensive workload and simply lead counter attacks. While people would claim Ronaldo didnt have the same privillege of being in a great team like Messi, Im almost certain Ronaldo would not survive in such complex system. Thats the difference between the two of them.

Doesn't look like this Argentina team is going to bounce back. It's like those 3 finals they made was their peak but they couldn't capitalize on it.

Sad for Messi, this would be a massive blow for him.

Argentina actually over achieved with Messi. They are such a shit team it surprising he took them so far so many times.

If there is one player who has screwed Messi's legacy it's Higuain. Useless fucker.

Leo Messi chances created + dribbles vs Venezuela

Oh my God! That second move where he dribbles through different players nut megs one of them, runs from the center line on to the left wing.... Tries to make a one-two with the donkey and what does he do? Give it straight back to Venezuela mid fielder (#20)!

In the fourth move, (right after the one where he takes a shot in the D box)..... He has to dribble through so many Venezuelan mid fielders and not a sign of an Argentinian in the center at all! All of them just looking at the play and enjoying it instead of offering hm a passing outlet!

He makes a brilliant diagonal pass and what would the left back or left winger do? Heads it towards center! Seriously!? I don't know if he heard of controlling an aerial pass!

He makes a brilliant through-ball to the striker. what does he do? Sends the back out for a goal kick with his first-touch!

I don't know if the Argentina player are just brain dead or managers managing the team take a chill pill and just stop bothering to actually give them instructions!

If Messi does retire, so be it. It will ultimately bring light to how this "talented and world class" team could even win at least one game without Messi.

Been saying Argentina has a shiet team without Messi this whole time, they suck at all positions yet the scapegoat is always Messi, not other who seem to forgot how to touch the ball when playing for the NT.

Yes, the media constantly reinforces this infantile hero-worship culture. The back side of this for players like Messi is that when the team fails, the hero takes the hit. They build them up when things go well so they can smack them down when the chance presents itself. Truth and nuance is often too complex to make for good headlines.

It's so sad that future generations will have the narrative set to Ronaldo over Messi. Ronaldo will win more Ballon D'ors, probably more Champions Leagues (hard to see Messi winning any more which means no more B'dor), will break the record for international goals and won a trophy with Portugal. If Messi leaves next year Ronaldo will also break his La Liga scoring record. If Messi stays he has to prop up an ailing team.

Such a shame his legacy has been ruined through no fault of his own. A tragedy.
