Is Messi the greatest of his generation? Yes without question.
Is the Messi the greatest ever? No I don't think so. I believe Di Stefano is the greatest that has ever play who made the white shirt of RM famous. 2nd Maradona then 3rd would be Messi for me.

So I guess you're 80 years old and have watched Di Stefano in action. Welcome to the forums paps!

Let's wait and see. We've seen stranger opinions. If he starts being annoying and brazen we'll ban him.

Don't refrain from using report button.

Messi loses bonus points for not tracking back and walking too much in the later stages of his career. Di Stefano was everywhere, defence, midfield and attack. He built attacks from the back and was an all round great player. Well what can I say about Maradona, the greatest dribbler of a ball the world and has ever seen and will probably ever see. Don't forget the pitches maradona had to play on compared to the luxury pitches today. Also the game was so much more physical back then, watch maradona have a ankle broke while playing for barcelona, the player that did was a known dirty player and he wasnt even sent off for it. Maradona's goal against England in the 86 world cup is the goal of the century for a reason. Only messi fanboys think he is better than maradona. Ask people in argentina who is better, you will get a more accurate answer. Don't forget maradonas spell in Napoli where Serie A was the best league in the world at the time. Napoli beat AC milan one of the greatest sides that ever played the game to the league title and it proves maradonas greatness even more to do it with a club like Napoli. Maradona is messi on steroids.

Is Messi the greatest
I'd say yes.

You can't compare him to stars from the past. Defenses were not as good as now.

I dislike this kind of comparison, but no one can oppose that modern football is a more difficult environment, and yet he shined like no player before.

People can be blinded because he failed so far with his national team, but that's too easy. He topped European football like no player before him.

Wrong, the Serie A defences of the 80s and 90s were greater than the defences playing today. Messi has been spoilt by staying at one club and having Xavi and Iniesta in their primes. Messi wouldn't be as great without them. They would make any player look great.

But not taking into consideration that Xavi and Iniesta both worked in pairs in Spain? And who else were there at Spain? Wow. Busquets, Villa, Pedro and Puyol. They were well familiar and well versed with the tiki taka they were p)aying. The chemistry were already there. With Ramos and Casillas. One of the best keeper in the wc 2010. Chemistry and tactics were a huge problem in tournaments like World Cup, bcos international players hardly trained much together. Spain clearly didnt have tat problem plus they had many Barcelona and Madrid players.

By your logic, Xavi and Iniesta had swarms of good players around them in their whole career. And all were very well familiar with the system that they are playing. Does that mean Xavi and Iniesta could only do well in one system? Throw them into a different system would they still have performed well? And what if Xavi was alone, vice versa?

And who else were on the same level with Messi in Argentina in terms of technical brilliance? Aguero? Higuain? Pastore? Only Mascherano and Messi were the ones that did very well during the World Cup, the rest were jack shit.

And how would u compare players in the 80s, when there were entirely different generation of players playing then. Without common variables, timeline to gauge them fairly. Just bcos it came frm YOU? Who are u to know how tough they were 30 fking years ago?

Nice troll but it aint working.

Messi did well during the world cup ? smh I don't know what WC you was watching but it wasnt the 2014 WC in brazil thats for sure. Messi was walking through that whole tournament and he didn't do much. Even Ron Vlaar marked Messi out of the semi final game smh Messi did absolutely nothing, should indicate to you how bad Messi was during that WC. Then Messi missed the huge chance against germany in the final so you cannot only blame higuain for missing chances. He mostly walked through that whole final. Him being voted the player of the tournament was a joke and only happened because of his reputation. Argentina has been waiting for a hero like Maradona to win them another world cup and Messi has failed to do that. Argentina had high hopes but they keep being let down. Messi chocking in those finals does not help his case. Missing that penalty in the last copa final was just terrible.

So Maradona was playing on ploughlands against armed raptors, Di Stefano was a defender, midfielder, attacker and a goal keeper and Messi is playing against snowflakes (especially in Mourinho era in RM) in modern football? That means that anyone coming from modern football simply cannot be better than Maradona or Di Stefano, because well, today's football is so delicate?

Maradona had a better individual World Cup than Messi has ever had no doubt but Argentina had s far stronger side back then.

Maradona had nothing like the club career Messi had or even had any other top intl tournaments.
