10 - Lionel Messi - v5

It's so sad that future generations will have the narrative set to Ronaldo over Messi. Ronaldo will win more Ballon D'ors, probably more Champions Leagues (hard to see Messi winning any more which means no more B'dor), will break the record for international goals and won a trophy with Portugal. If Messi leaves next year Ronaldo will also break his La Liga scoring record. If Messi stays he has to prop up an ailing team.

Such a shame his legacy has been ruined through no fault of his own. A tragedy.

Whats also very sad is your negativity, crying about possible things that haven't happened.
Messy legacy isn't ruined, thats ridiculous just like people who are this negative all the time. Its pathetic.

Know one who knows anything about football thinks Ronaldo is close to Messi. Platini has 3 Balon d'Or's I think Maradona has 1, who is remembered more fondly? People don't remember stats they will remember moments and Messi kills Ronaldo there.

Ex Madrid player Esteban Granero on when he met Messi for the first time.

We were both born in 1987, I know him since we were 15. We went to a tournament in Villareal with Madrid's U16 and we were staying at the same hotel as Barcelona. I had a good relationship with the ones I knew from the national team: Piqué, Marc Valiente, Cesc...

And what happened?

I saw Piqué at the hotel. Back then we used to beat them always, and Piqué saw me and grabbed me: "This year we'll win". And I said: "No fucking way". "Yes", he said, "we have this new guy and he's fantastic". "Who?" I asked. "That one over there". And he pointed to the pool and I saw a small kid, very small. Alone, sitting by the pool with his feet in the water, self-absorbed. Piqué is a prankster, he has always been, and I thought he was messing with me. In fact, what I thought was: "He's messing with me and he's messing with his own team mate". That was the first time I saw Messi.

How was the match?

He crushed us. They won 3-0. He was spectacular. Very short and strong as a rock. But the craziest thing was how he carried the ball. Stuck to his foot, it was impossible to take it away. Shocking, it was scary to think about what he could become.

And 15 years later I see him on the pitch and I think: "Fuck, he's still here".

I agree and was about to post something similar in response to MItchell's post. I have yet to find a person with a decent understanding of football who thinks Ronaldo is better than Messi.
Also things are well-documented with Youtube and all. In times to come people will look up videos of Messi when they are looking for football magic. Ronaldo will probably be remembered as an amazing striker and finisher. Messi as possibly the best thing to have ever graced the game of football.

It's clear as day, it's like fatalism now.

Messi's legacy is still there because of what he did in his 20s but he's not going to achieve much more and what Ronaldo will achieve in his 30s will cement his legacy further.

What can Messi possibly achieve with this Argentine and Barca side? Unless Dembele, Semedo and Paulinho play like world beaters this season and Dybala turns into a world beater with Argentina.

Ronaldo has a red carpet laid down for him till he retires- Real Madrid is doing well, Portugal looks bright with talent after they won the Euros, good coach and the right players fit for their playstyle. Messi, on the other hand, has massive chaos going on behind the curtains in a club which he so dearly held to, Argentina team looks like they are on a decline, players are not comfortable with the Sampaoli's system, cant compliment Messi, and people starts to actually question his personality and leadership?

Its almost inevitably set for the most convenient narrative and its easy to say one turned out to be the better "hero" than the other, bcos one is enjoying and basking in the glamour and success of the teams, the other is going through psychological and institutional turmoil. For Messi, I finally have to admit that it is depressing as hell and that his final years of his career is actually going to end up in an anticlimatic tragedy.

The media constantly feeds on it and the pressure isn't gonna make it any easier for the little man. He is one of the rarest talent and prodigy that has ever graced the football pitch, yet people are drawing baseless comparison even though he is clearly in a different and dire situation.

I guess life isn't fair even for the greatest, what's even more frustrating is that some people fails to even recognise it, just believing whatever they see or hear. Harsh reality, sadly.

It really is tragic. At this point Argentina would do well to just qualify.

Ronaldo will probably edge ahead 6-5 next year and there's the prospect of a 3rd CL title in a row (5-4 over Messi) or Portugal winning the World Cup. Either of these happen and the Ballon D'or is his. That then sets the narrative that he's the best of his generation.

Argentina aren't going to do anything and Barca can't win the CL without a midfield.

Its pointless and pathetic crying about things that haven't happened. Its pointless and pathetic to always have such a defaitist attitute. Borderline trolling when you're always repeating the same negative things. Or maybe Barcelona ain't for you, maybe a team like Arsenal is more up your alley.

The kids these days don't understand football, they care about stats, numbers, FIFA overall ratings.

They also only remember what happened recently

Clearly talking about the Messi situation not Barcelona's. Who's trolling now? Also, the guy is in his 30s now, trying to win his only chance at World Cup. Now they even struggle to qualify. Just being realistic for once, isnt negativity.

And did you really think Barcelona could have pulled off the 6-1 "miracle" win without clear match fixing and ur handy dandy referees? Getting destroyed by Juventus is wake up call to reality. So quit whining as well with people trying to give their take on what's presented to them right now.

Messi could retire tomorrow and his legacy would still be cemented as the best and most complete player ever. In 40 years people will still talk about the sheer magic that Messi displayed in all aspects of the game. He is way more than just goals.

And at the end of the day it's just football... Calling it a tragedy over and over shows that you are putting too much importance into these things. Football is the most important of all unimportant things, but it's still just that - unimportant in the grand scheme. :)

It's De Stefano/Kubala all over again where everything goes the way of one player. Real could win 5 CL in a row too at this rate.

Lol and u think everyone is a Barca or Messi fan? The media and football fans are havin none of that. Tragedy is used figuratively, obviously not the tragedy involving life and death. In this context, we are talking about purely football. Football would be the "grand scheme" in this case. Learn to read, with context, period.
