10 - Lionel Messi - v5

He was poor and is one of the players that contributes to the lacklustre feel about the team as he moves so little and played with no urgency unless ball lands at his feet.

Dont expect Messi to win games like these but he could do a lot more to try and increase the pace and urgency of the game. Look to get on ball more and influence things.

Was flicking between games tonight and the urgency and pace to the other top teams was frightening compared to Barca and Messi gets a pass on that as he is a genius on the ball but in some games he could show more off the ball to try and change things.

Cant have a Messi who is basically a liability defensively surrounded by players like Suarez, Iniesta and Rakitic. Need to have players that compliment him better than that and are able to put in that hard graft.

I don't think he is able to play 90 minutes if he starts running like a normal player.

I'm very worried about his away performances...it seems like he's GOAT at home and almost looks lost away from home and ends up literally walking around.

It has to be something tactically for such one extreme to another in performance.

It was a joke last night. Early on he was passing to people looking for one twos and trying to make things happen but Raki, Suarez or someone would just fuck it up. Eventually he thought what's the point and just kept the ball himself but he was too crowded out and marshalled by their whole defence to do anything. And nobody on our shit team could do anything with all the extra space.

I'm starting to fear that teams have figured out the false 9 again as they did in 2013.

Not unlikely as the recipe for how to break down the false nine system is pretty well documented and understood by now. In my opinion going back to it is a very bad idea, as it relies way too much on Messi having an inhuman performance for it to succeed.

Also, if we had two other forwards of absolute world class it would help tremendously, as it pretty much nullifies the option to crowd Messi out of the game as it would leave too much space for the other forwards to do damage on their own. But as we stand right now, with Suarez struggling massively just to get his touch working, and Dembele injured for half of the season, we're extra vulnerable to any system where Messi can get crowded and shut down, as he more easily can be in the deep false nine position.

When we go away from home teams are able to push up and crowd Messi out the game knowing there's nobody to do anything with the space created and the midfield are useless. We've turned into Argentina. It's so unfair on Messi.

Incredible how we overreact when he has a bad game, but people don't doubt Ronaldo even if he has practically a whole season on an average level.
We are addicted too much on his consistency and stellar performance.

Ronaldo didnt score v Betis and was getting mocked.

Just about any poor game Ronaldo or Messi has gets focused on.

Ronaldo has not had a season even close to average in years though. Neither has Messi but games or run of games both go under microscope.
