I've been saying all along that without Messi Argentina would not have gotten even close to those three final appearances. What a bunch of gutless wonders he has as a supporting cast especially the forwards.

the third goal was definitely a fluke (kind of). But that's the luck of the champions. the second strike for the second goal, now that was the shit. it's typical messi he strikes the hell out of the ball from an almost standing position, he only needs one step to find that power which is something unusual for mortal players.

How the fuck was the third goal a fluke? It was a beautifully-weighted, lobbed shot.

Idk if it's just me but Messi seems extra deadly with his finishing and striking abilities this season. There's a lack of chances for him given the situations at Barca and Argentina but whenever he does get an opportunity, he either buries it or is damn near scoring.

He's so superior to Ronaldo it's not even funny. The latter relies on chances spoon-fed to him on a platter and 90% of his contributions are just one touch finishes. He rarely even has to create his own shots with dribbling or quick cuts. Messi is an offensive juggernaut that initiates plays from deep positions, creates the chance for others, or cuts teams apart with forward one-twos and then creates the shot for himself as he did in that first goal. That play is one he's run several hundreds of times and I wouldn't be surprised if he had near 50 goals scored in a similar style. It's so masterful and underappreciated, and he's the only player ever to pull it off with so much consistency. He's an insanely high volume scorer with a shockingly low rate of assisted goals compared to other volume scorers, and even his assisted goals are chances that he essentially created from deep and finished himself.

Football analysis as a whole seems to be at a very rudimentary level compared to some other team sports. It leads to the sort of false equivalence that Messi's goals are equal to Ronaldo's goals in execution, and that goals are the only metric for performance. That's the only reason why Messi vs. Ronaldo exists, because the aggregate fandom of football is too stupid to appreciate the true disparity between the two. The more advanced football analytics gets, and the deeper one goes into studying what makes players/teams succeed, will undoubtedly make it more and more clear as to why Messi is the best and without peer.

People who say he is carrying argentina need to remember that he is also carrying barca. We would be nothing without him right now.

That is true, but he tends to get much more recognition for carrying Barca. He is a god in Barcelona but in Argentina, he has to endure so much criticism for only dragging them to three bloody finals in a row. It is rediculously ungrateful to their best player ever

Well said man. Well said! This is what I always tell to people, but they just see the scoreboard and thats it. Ronaldo is not on same level as Messi as a football player. Amen!

True, at the end, normal people don't understand "variance" and in some other life Messi would win some of these, but not in this one. He will win final eventually, because he will make more of them..

And he won Gold Medal in Olympics for Argentina. I guess that counts as nothing? I remember Brazilians being extra proud of it year ago, or whenever the Olympics were. People forget things.

So going by the logic of giving the ballon dor in this decade, he should win one this year, no? I mean, he scored a hat-trick that practically led Argentina to the WC.:coffee:

Congrats Lio. Great things come the hard way. I hope the best is yet to come.

D10S! I'm glad I stayed up all night to witness Messi's magic. What he achieved on that terrible pitch makes his performance even more impressive.
