Been in BRazil for 4 months straight, surely he's jet lagged. Give him a pass for this one.
Since I am one of Ney-hate guys, Ney's Barca's season officially started.
His skills were never a problem, even for guys who don't like him that much.
His problem is his head, in 2 ways:
1. how he actually uses his pure footballing style, for example:
a) will he plays less like a default Neymar and more with brains (like he played in 2014/15 season) when he was playing fast (Pedro-like, but with way better skills), wasn't hogging the ball, wasn't slowing down the game, didn't play tricks just to please the crowd and get zero end product on the other hand
b) or he will play like a default Neymar, who too often plays football as if he is having fun with his mates on some Rio's beach, when he plays slow, he is hogging the ball, he plays his own game regardless of what other 10 teammates around him are currently doing, he is dribbling backwards, he tries to dribble past 4 defenders whenever possible, he tries all kind of crowdpleasing tricks whenever possible, diving 5 times per match etc
2. plus, his 2nd problem is his motivation and consistency for longer time periods, he loses motivation quite easily
In the last season, when he played like a crap for months, it seemed that he was low on motivation and whatever he tried on field=was horrible (passes, dribbles, shots, playmaking).
Currently, after Olympic's gold and NT matches, his motivation seems fine for now.
BUT, he played again as a beach-boy-Neymar who tries to please the crowd more than he tries to create a fast, simple action which can result in a goal.
Imo, Neymar plays the best when he doesn't listen to his natural instincts in terms of playing fast/slow, dribble or not to dribble etc, and when he plays more like a robot who follows the orders (a robot with awesome skills).
When he plays like his true self, it usually looks like yesterday and like spring of 2015/16 season.
He is naturally just a too playful player. But unlike Ronaldinho and similar players (who knew how to mix perfectly their default playfulness with an end product), Ney doesn't know yet how to achieve that.
He managed to achieve it 2014/15, but since this is his 4th season here, it is hard to tell whether a robot-Neymar-with fast plays and high end product from 2014/15 is a true Neymar, or this, too playful Neymar from 2014, 2016 (and maybe) 2017 is a real Neymar.
So, currently:
1. his motivation is good
2. but he plays like a playful-Brasilian beach boy Neymar
Sadly, his play can get even worst, if:
1. his motivation will drop
2. if he'll play like a playful boy Neymar
On the other hand, imo, he can shine ONLY when:
1. he is high on motivation to play and win trophies
2. when he plays less like his true self and more like a robot (improved Pedro, Barca's Dna fast football style) with Ney's skills
Again, his skills are not a problem.
He can turn into a player whom Barca fans expect ONLY if he wins against those 2 enemies inside of his head (motivation+consistency and not to play like his true self).
Maybe this is too harsh since he played only 1 match for us, but since the other guys were already writing songs about how Neymar matured and improved mentally this summer (after a few matches for Brasil), we need this kind of posts also.
