Well he did not have to. He just activated his buyout clause. However, if there were not a buyout clause, his attitudes might have been different.

Curious as to why you think these clubs must sell the player when they are under contract? The player has willingly signed a contract and the club that owns the contract has the right to make the player see the contract through. The selling team also sets the price and if they want €150m then that's the price for the player regardless of who the buying club is.

Of course they don't have to sell. It's just useless to still pursue Dembele then when the club obviously isn't willing to pay 150m.
But let's be honest: if Dembele further improves, it is just a matter of time that he leaves Dortmund. Maybe for more then 150m, maybe for less. They will just not doing themselves nor Dembele a favour if they force him to stay. On the other hand though, I wouldn't pay 150m for him.

If dembele acted professionaly, he would have had more chance to get this transfer done.
