If we can recoup the full fee this summer I'd be ok with selling him if we renew Dembele and sign a LW instead. With that said, I'm also not against giving him a full second season to see what he can do, but then we of course run the risk of not getting the same amount of money.

They will sell Raphinha to buy real Spaniard like Olmo. Drool signing for Barca.

In other words, better keep Raphinha. :D

The problem with Raphinha is that he is not good enough for us to run the game through him, so he needs to find a way to up his productivity. It is evident that some of his passes are high class, but he needs more consistency. Not getting his errors vs top passes balance right for the elite level.

Not possible to give him the ball 10 times for him to play 2 great passes and squander the rest. Barca can do better as a team on the offensive front than that, they are not a midtable club that has no better plan to work with.

Other than that, his implication and professionalism are exemplary so far. But more is required for sure.

A winger has to be able FIRST and FOREMOST to dribble
Anything else comes after that

Raphinia can't dribble for his life
He has to find another position in the right half-space where he can play those final balls, but I am not sure there is one

Does anyone know Dembele's dribbling stats, out of curiosity? Possibly stratified by level of team (top 4 versus not)?

If I had to guess, he is elite dribbler vs medium - low opposition, and only good vs bigger teams. Still, dribbling is his only top class attribute, he is basically an odd player.

So you saying dribbling is optional?

Totally. Too many players to count got the biggest titles and had amazing careers while not not being particularly gifted dribblers. Even ronaldo was average at beating his man at Madrid, and mostly transitioned to a central forward even though technically he played on the left.

Still you need to have other great attributes. The players that don't make it have far more flaws than just not being gifted dribblers.

I'd say speed, stamina to go up and down and help out in defense for the full duration of a game, intelligence to know how to attack the goal, and scoring ability once you get into good positions are more important attributes.

262 out of 460 dribbles successful over last 5.5 years (~57% success)

https://fbref.com/en/players/d70ce98e/Lionel-Messi

773 out of 1182 dribbles successful over last 5.5 years (~ 66% success). If they tracked Messi's numbers in his physical prime, I bet this is something like 2,500 dribbles completed since 08-09 at success of > 70%

https://fbref.com/en/players/69384e5d/Neymar

480 out of 841 dribbles successful over last 5.5 years (~57% success) for Neymar

https://fbref.com/en/players/e342ad68/Mohamed-Salah

316 out of 626 (50%) for Salah

https://fbref.com/en/players/42fd9c7f/Kylian-Mbappe

434 out of 850 (51%) for Mbappe

If only Dembele was a better shooter, his dribbling is underrated (basically second only to Messi from 17-18 to 22-23, at least stats wise). Neymar and Mbappe are probably better v the big teams, as is Messi obviously.

All of these other players are serious goal threats post their dribble, unlike Dembele. If he can improve this aspect of his game...

Big games are also about mentality above all. Dembele is kind of nervous in big games and not the same player, compared to Mbappe, who plays vs Madrid and Bayern exactly with the same confidence as vs Clermont.

Also, Mbappe's shooting technique is miles better than Dembele's.
