13 - Iñaki Peña

How many comments insulted Flick for picking Pena over Woj, that he will lose us both games, Bayern and Madrid? He saw them both in training for a couple of weeks and decided for Pena. The games proved him right. No one is saying Pena is a great keeper, but he's obviously good enough to do the basics and to shine here and there.
Let's hope Woj is going to surpass his level of course, but we should be a bit calmer now knowing we can also win big games with Pena.

Some thing our defense did really well is not give away space from front of the goal.

Real did not get to test pena with shots from right outside box like they did in supercup(they did try to play it over him from even farther cause they know he short)

Not to take away from pena. He had his best game ever today. Some really great clearances.

If you asked me two weeks ago, I'd say this guy is our 3rd choice keeper at best and should be cleaning Szczezny's gloves. Yesterday he was one of the 3 or 4 best players on the pitch and a key component of our victory. Outside the wage bill I see no reason to bench him for Szczez at this moment. Of course the season is still young and I'm sure there will be rotation but for me, Pena earned his place in starting eleven the way he played at Bernabeu. TS must be envious watching us beating Bayern and Real Madrid with Inaki in goal lol

The reason to bench him for Szczez is latter is far superior keeper. One world class performance won’t change that.

But if Flick decides to keep Pena as first choice for now, he deserved it.

Yeah, I'd easily agree with you even a week ago, but today, I'm not so sure about Szczez being the 'far superior' keeper anymore. I mean, if you compare their careers it's obvious who is better, but as of today, we need to see Szczez play to be able to judge his form and current level of abilities and compare. I've seen a good deal of embarassing blunders and sent offs from him over the years for the clubs and for Poland team, so tbh I wonder which version of Szczez we will see at Barca, the cool world class one or the rash and shaky one.

I do consider him a great (best of all, FREE!) transfer but let's not forget Szczez went out of retirement to play for us, while Pena is only 25 years old which is a baby age for a goalkeeper. He can still improve and hopefully the Bernabeu game can be something he can build on. I guess the jury on Pena's class (whether his Bernabeu display was just a fluke or a taste of things to come) as well as on Szczez's current disposition is still out and we'll see how both of them will do throughout the season.

Anyway we're lucky we can have this conversation. I thought our season was over when TS got injured.

Great game

But still, we won't win trophies with him as GK. I would guess Peña plays next Liga game and then in CL Tek makes his debut.
Depends on many things. Mainly on how Tek performs once he's fit to start. If he's shit Peña will have to jump in as number 1. The responsibility that would be given, he would take it much more seriously and I think would eventually improve as a goalkeeper overall after some time. He's had 2 good performances in 2 big games against Bayern and Real, it gives him big confidence that can fuel him to become what we could never have imagined him to be. He's still very short though, but it's not like we didn't see short keepers turn out to be good in the past.

We have seen that he, indeed, can help us in big games - both in CL and Liga. Whether he can do it consistently, whether he can release the pressure a bit and play with more confidence - that's the question. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Good that he has competition, too. Unlike our previous goalkeepers.

The clearance on the line was terrific

maybe competition was the key to unleash the real Pena

Do you remember in the 03/04 (I think) Clasico, Valdes done an equally impressive clearance off the line at Bernabeu.

Madrid scored directly from the corner after, while yesterday it was called offside. But both world class saves.

Credit where it's due... He was great yesterday.

That said, I still have as much confidence with him as I had with Pinto years ago.

Jorquera once had an absolutely world class game against Bilbao or something. Become a cult hero until he got a string of games and was trash unfortunately.

I don't think we can ride our luck with Pena as it will run out like how he performed under Xavi. But we have no choice now.
