Javier Mascherano will play his 100th official match for FC Barcelona if he features in tonight’s match against Real Madrid

Despite being signed as a midfielder, the Argentine has played most of his games as a center back, pairing up with Puyol, Piqué and Abidal

Javier Alejandro Mascherano will feature in his 100th official match for FC Barcelona if he's given the nod to play against Real Madrid tonight. El Jefecito [The little boss], arrived to Barça from Liverpool as a renowned midfielder, and in just two short years as an Azulgrana he’s turned into an essential player for both Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova. Mascherano has played more than 60% of his games as a center back, pairing up with Puyol, Piqué and Abidal in the middle. His brilliant performances on defence have earned him the reputation of being one of the best defensive players in the world.

Mascherano enjoys his new position

On April 12, 2011, in a Champions League math against Shaktar Donetsk, Mascherano played his first game as a center back. Before that, he defended the Azulgrana colours as a defensive midfielder but his appearances for Barça were sparse. On that day, however, the Argentine proved that he could play in his new position. The following season, he became a permanent fixture in Barça’s back line. “I think it’s really positive that I changed positions, because it gave me the chance to play and it allowed me to consistently play for a big club, beyond that, I’m happy to give the manager various options to choose from,” said Mascherano.

“I think it’s important for a player to be able to play in two or three positions, it empowers the manager to choose which players get to play," said Mascherano.

Changing styles of play

Javier Mascherano has had to adapt to a position that was foreign to him when he arrived from Liverpool. However, the Argentine transitioned brilliantly and has become accustomed to the team’s style of play but he knew that something about his play needed to change if he was to succeed at FC Barcelona: “the most important change in terms of play [that I had to make] was my mentality. You know you have team-mates behind you to support you when you play in the midfield. Now that I play as a center back, I know that if I make a mistake it very well could result in a goal against us. With that said, I think it’s been a positive change in my career.”

Mascherano now has the chance to win his eighth title with FC Barcelona and play his 100th match as an Azulgrana.*

Hi, its me..
he messed up, but after that i thought he got his shit together. Made a couple of really good tackles as well that probably would have gone in otherwise.

his long passes forward and just general roaming on the ball has come on a long way since he arrived.

but in general one to forget for the whole defense really.

marked his 100 game for barcelona with a poor perfomance and that was a real surprise although he manages again one great tackle to prevent higuain scoring the 3rd goal

I may get hate for saying it, but he fucks up in important (this was a clasico even if its a shitty super cup) games. Happened vs Chelsea, too. He was great the rest of the game, but still, the damage was already done.

Yes, great player, but he has disappointed in the big games for the most part. Though I think we had more fundamental tactical problems tonight, seeing him and pique get caught out by the exact same kind of long balls behind the defense.

He is dissapointing in big gamse 'cos he is not a CB.He can't defend long balls period and partnered with pique equals disaster.Every time they have been put under pressure they collapse,he's good when we dominate possesion but that's not good enough

Barçapocalypse NOW!
Hate all you want, but I'm proud of him... That mistake was horrendous and costly, but the heart of this guy is immense, the last ditch tackles on Higuain (one was on Ozil or Di Maria maybe?) were amazing and it was unfortunate that Pedro couldn't score from his long pass...

Our defense was never as good as some people here think. It was the high-pressuring and work ethic of the players in front of them plus the fact that they play in a team that has 70% possession that hides some of their defeciencies. This is the problem at times with Mascherano as well and we saw that against Chelsea in the stamford bridge where he was at fault for the Drogba goal. His positioning at times is suspect but he uses his recovery speed and pace to overcome his mistakes and make last-ditch tackles as he did tonight to deny Higuain. But you;re not really a world-class defender if you have to rely on that too much, a great defender is always in the right position so doesn't have to make those kind of tackles. A great defender is an expert in denying the opposition space.

His lack of height also poses a problem for us especially on corners and set-pieces. Despite what some might here think, Mascherano is not a world-class defender. He's done remarkably well for a guy who has only started playing there in the last few years but he is not world-class. Guys like Cannavaro and Nesta are world-class not Javier.........

It's really in the big games that the world-class players stand out because you're going up against the best and that;s where you will be tested the most. Mascherano is not a bad defender but he's not world-class and having to play alongside Pique is not ideal for him......
