Arrogance has a lot to do with as it seems that the club wants to somehow re-create the CB position. I remember when Mascherano was introduced by Barca, he was presented as a guy with versatility who could play different positions, it wasn't out of the blue then that he was playing at CB. Even when Song was bought, he was starting games at the back and that was costly, I know of no one in England who was convinced that Alex was a good CB and yet we bought and started him at the back. One of the reasons given for the move by the managers was that Alex was 'good at bringing the ball out from the back'. We've had a traditional CB like Puyol who is okay with the ball at his feet but is mainly playing due to his defensive skills and look how well that has gone....Early on in the season, I was reading about Barca being interested in signing David Luiz when no one in England is convinced of him defensively. Barca seem to have a weird logic when it comes to choosing CB's in recent times.
Look at Madrid and what they have done buying a traditional style of CB like Varane who is quick with his feet and yet is also a physical prescence and good in the air, while we seem to be experimenting at such a crucial position. Madrid also play a high-line.....
Starting a short, under-sized DM at CB is more foolish than risky especially when he could be going up against taller, physical players like Drogba. That match-up has more negatives than positives as you will find in most cases when Mascherano goes up against elite teams and attackers.....
I'm not saying that Masch should never play at CB.......he could be used in certain situations against lower quality opponents or in emergency situations but I'd much rather see a more natural CB in that position.....
