14 - Javier Mascherano

Arrogance has a lot to do with as it seems that the club wants to somehow re-create the CB position. I remember when Mascherano was introduced by Barca, he was presented as a guy with versatility who could play different positions, it wasn't out of the blue then that he was playing at CB. Even when Song was bought, he was starting games at the back and that was costly, I know of no one in England who was convinced that Alex was a good CB and yet we bought and started him at the back. One of the reasons given for the move by the managers was that Alex was 'good at bringing the ball out from the back'. We've had a traditional CB like Puyol who is okay with the ball at his feet but is mainly playing due to his defensive skills and look how well that has gone....Early on in the season, I was reading about Barca being interested in signing David Luiz when no one in England is convinced of him defensively. Barca seem to have a weird logic when it comes to choosing CB's in recent times.

Look at Madrid and what they have done buying a traditional style of CB like Varane who is quick with his feet and yet is also a physical prescence and good in the air, while we seem to be experimenting at such a crucial position. Madrid also play a high-line.....

Starting a short, under-sized DM at CB is more foolish than risky especially when he could be going up against taller, physical players like Drogba. That match-up has more negatives than positives as you will find in most cases when Mascherano goes up against elite teams and attackers.....

I'm not saying that Masch should never play at CB.......he could be used in certain situations against lower quality opponents or in emergency situations but I'd much rather see a more natural CB in that position.....

Mascherano cant get into any other top level team except Barca- that just sums up the whole story

OT:Is there any CB in football shorter than him?

Under what logic do you base that ludicrous comment? Barca are at the top, so if he's making it into the best team in the world, why wouldn't he start for anyone else? Stupid comment, shouldn't really have to reply to it.

Let me see he's short, bad positioning, scores so many own goals. The only thing he does have is good tackling because he's a DM. Name one top level club where he would start. He would only be used as CB in other teams in emergencies

So you're saying JUST CB? Ok...

Barca have a unique style which is why he has been able to get away with playing at CB, but since he has been our best centre-back for certain periods whilst he has been at Barca (Some of you have very short memories), he has proved himself at the highest level under some of the most difficult conditions to be a defender. It's never been easy to defend at Barca, the emphasis has always been on keeping the ball and attacking - Partly the reason why we do have versatile players like Mascherano, Busquets and Song playing at CB. I'm sure many teams would happily have him as part of a more stable back-line. I do agree that most teams would use him as a DM though.

You misunderstand me. I said he can get way with playing at CB only against weak teams. Even when he was the "the best defender" during certain times he was caught out of position too many times compared to proper CB. He can get away with it against weaker teams sometimes (Even that is not always the case aka Sociedad) Plus he's taking away the playing time of Bartra who has the potential to become a good proper CB. That's why we need a successor of Puyol. Mascherano was never and will not be a long term solution

No Mascherano should never be viewed as a long term replacement, but i'm just not in agreement with people giving him so much slack. Don't get me wrong, I agree with comments against his poor positioning and his occasional brain fart decision making skills, but he has been solid for us in so many games and including those against the big teams. The bottom line is we are still in the domestic and european cup competitions and our league record is 19-2-1, which is incredible. His mistakes have not cost us anything (Apart from the one loss in the league :D).

Does nobody remember that awesome tackle on RVP a few seasons ago? :worthy:

Having said that, I still think the club should bring in a proper CB like Hummels.

If Hummels is too expensive we can go for Howedes. He will be the partner of Hummels in the national team soon with Badstuber sucking so much. But knowing Barca's management i doubt they would even consider it or if they are even aware of his existence
