14 - Javier Mascherano

Damn, Mascherano was totally destroyed last night. That's a game he'll soon want to forget. A good, but certainly not great player in Benzema totally owned his bacon. And it wasn't only on the air, Benzema was running circles around him on the ground as well.
The whole backline was weak, but Mascherano was completely exposed.

I don't agree at all. I think Alves and Masch were terrible but both Pique and Alba were excellent. All of Madrid's attacks came down the Alves-Masch side whereas Alba made Bale look awful yesterday and Pique was solid as he has been every big game this season.

I would not categorize Alba and Pique as excellent. You yourself just showed that the focus of Madrid attack was on exploiting the numbers on the right, consequently Alba and Pique were not attacked head on consistently, thus they did not feel the full brunt of the pressure.

Pique was the best of the 4, he was solid enough, and Alba was not tested much aside from a couple of clearances.

The backline as a unit, was not strong. If Pique is going to consistently be your best defender, you know you're going to be in trouble.

Our defense was shit last night and Mascherano was the main culprit. He's had some amazing games for us but that was bad. If we don't buy defenders this summer, I'm killing myself.

I doubt anyone dislikes Masch. I love him, but not playing cb in those kind of games... Sad part is it's not his fault. He gives his all, but it's not enough.

True. Piqué and Alba might not be the best defenders in the world but if we manage to pair them with a great CB and RB our defense will be rock solid again.

Agreed. Pique has to be your weak link in the defensive chain, not your strong link or anchor. He is not consistent enough nor is he fundamentally sound overall to be your anchor. He must be your 2nd CB and have a superior CB by his side that has good cover skills to support Pique when he gets beat or is found wanting on pace and agility, which happens plenty. If he is able to get support, Pique is a very adequate defender, and can bring good performances to the team.

Alba also needs cover. He is excellent intercepting balls and clearing them. His speed allows him to cover space quickly and intercepts dangerous passes. However, Alba struggles a lot 1v1 defending, specially vs someone who displays physicality. He is also a poor tackler, and a fullback needs to be a decent tackler. Alba also needs a strong backline to support him. He cannot be your strong link, else you're going to find yourself in trouble.

I don't know if people noticed this, but usually the backline is Alves-Pique-Masche-Alba. VS Madrid, Pique and Masche switched around. I assume Martino anticipated speed attacks from the right, and switched Masche and Pique around so Mascherano's superior speed to Pique would help out on the right. It was a sound analysis, however maybe the lack of familiarity playing right had a part in Mascherano getting totally destroyed. Alves getting no help to cover his wing also threw that gameplan out the window.

Bottom line though, the team needs some serious reinforcement at the back, among other areas.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Pique and Masche were switched so that Pique played next to Alba and Masche next to Alves in the last Clasico as well.

Yeah they were. Presumably so that either side of the defence has a fast player seeing as Masch & Alba are very quick and Alves and Pique are very slow.

Some solid rumors that he is close to an agreement with Napoli.

I know he's been a loyal servant, and gives his all. But at Barca, he'll always be a CB. And any injury or suspension to our new CB, will mean resorting to the same backline we've now. Having 2 legit CBs is no longer a p.o.v, but a matter of absolute necessity. Knowing the current board, only Masch's departure will effectuate it. For Busi's backup, Romeu is an option, as he's in tune with our passing game, but also offers physicality, and aerial attributes. He has only a year left on his Chelsea contract, so getting him won't be difficult.
