It really doesn't matter. It's just an armband. The players and the manager clearly have huge respect for him and see him as a captain. He is a natural born leader and not having an official title or an armband doesn't in any way stop that quality from shining through.

You could make a decent length highlights video of Masch receiving instructions from his various Barca managers on the sidelines during a match. Every single one of them have relied on him hugely. When the fans/media were doubting his ability to play as a centre back, Pep was calling him the best signing the club has made in years.
