While i agree wholeheartedly with what you are saying cause it's logical i can't help but think there was several cheap alternatives that wouldn't break the bank .
i mean even we managed to get 6 players for almost 70 million .. i think you could have used Khedira , Ozil for example which wouldn't cost you a lot ..
all those French DM's are very cheap and of high quality technically as well .
I believe you want a high profile name for a cheap price which is the main problem , not the lack of funds or lack of quality players

we are barca, we don't settle for 2nd or 3rd. and this squad is not deep enough to win. we need another DM. we payed 35m for a RB when we desperately needed one, and we shouldn't be stingy now when we desperately need another DM. i'm not the biggest fan of mascherano, in fact i think he's a liability at times, but we can't start the season with only busquets as a recognized DM.

Are you competing in a "state the obvious" competition?

I'm not saying we shouldn't sign Mascherano, I'm just defending Rosell against the criticism some have levied at him because he has veered from the bull in a china shop approach of Laporta & Txiki where the club rushed in, showed no sense in negotiations and ended up spunking millions more of the clubs money than they ever needed to. Some people seem to panic when a process of negotiation is entered into, yet there's no sense in offering 5m more to have the process concluded yesterday when we could wait a while longer and have the player at a price we're happy with. Have patience.

The deal looks a done deal but still moving it here makes no sense,who knows what will happen in the last minute,it looks a good deal if its foe 20-22
Advantages:
1-We get one of the best defensive midfielders in the world for a good price
2-He provides another dimension than Busquetes,Busquetes is more suited to home games or games we need to retain the ball more,Mascherano is more of a destroyer who will help us in strong away matches
3-we can use them as a double pivot or more likely use Busquetes in the Xavi role in the same 4-3-3 formation
4-we can use him as a centreback if we are short of options there,even as a rightback
disadvantages:
1-We have one of the best 2 DMFs in the world competing for one place,Busi is still my first choice but we will see what happens,yaya left for more minutes,will the same happen with Mascherano?IDK
2-Oriol ROmeu:an old midfielder could have been better for his developement,Busi is here for the long term,I dont think that we are signing Javier for only 2-3 years,but anyway,I beleive that if Romeu is good enough,he will make it here.

the problem with the numerous african DM's in ligue 1 is that there is an adaptation issue. they need time to get used to our style and how we play, and there's no guarantee they'll ever "get it" in the truest sense. so rather than sign a player who will need time to adapt, why not use the cantera who will also need time to adapt but are free and already "get it"? I like pep's approach now, in signing players whose adaptation time will be very low. mascherano would be one of those players. if you look at his style of play it would slot in perfectly with our short passing attack and he's an absolute terrier so would take to collective pressing like a duck to water.
