20 - Dani Olmo

Remember like a year ago when we thought he'll be like Coutinho? Slow, weak and without end product. Some experts we are... If he stays healthy he enters the Balon dor race with Lewa, Rapha and Lamine.

Coutinho started off well too. Problem for him was that he didn't get to play in the role Olmo now plays. Always LW or CM.
Did he really start well, or did people just accept his mediocrity in the beginning because he was a 150m hype transfer? I remember people cheering his 5 meter passes in his first games.
In his first 12 LaLiga games, he had 2 goals and 5 assists. One of them a 6:1 against Girona and the other one against Malaga. Olmo has already 5 goals in 6 games, while only playing exactly 270 minutes, which equals 3 full 90 minutes games. And from mediocrity it just went downwards.

Also at Liverpool, Coutinho played in his 16/17 season: 30 games as LW, 5 games as OM, 1 game as RW. That's a statistic of a pure LW.
In the first half of 17/18 season, before he transfered to us he also switched between LW and OM every second game.

I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with his position, but he was simply overhyped because of one single strong season at Liverpool and Bartomeu desperately searched for a new Neymar.

Yeah that's true. But why only count first 12 games? That first half a season he had 13 G/A in 18 Liga games. That's a good ratio.

The season we signed him though he was in the center with Mane and Salah around him mostly. And btw, at Transfermarkt they list his position as LW even in games he played LCM in a 4-3-1-2.

But why only count first 12 games?
Just for comparison with Olmo so far. But I think the further it goes, the worse the comparison will get for Coutinho

I don't want to badmouth him too much, he was a decent player overall, but not Barca starting material, out of position or not. He never showed a good or world class performance for a longer period of time than his one good year. For me, he was a typical €40-50m player who can shine if everything else works around him. Bartomeu sadly paid triple of that.
And Aston Villa was also happy to load him off fast enough. Now he plays in Brazil at 32, which is no age for a footballer yet.

While having Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi. Its a pity why did we try so many No.10ish players in the team, rather than an elite striker and an elite LW.
We always bought players to play them away from their preferred spots.

Coutinho decision making was way too slow. Was the same at Villa bar the early months that convinced them to transfer.

Maybe he lost his confidence, or maybe the speed of Kloppball in that era hid his defenciencies, but for us unless he could open up the shooting option in his first few touches, he could never find the correct pass and dwelled in possession.

Just a terrible player all around for us.
