21 - Frenkie de Jong

Who's better, who's worse is a moot point. Each of them offer different things.

Bet you Bayern doesn't steamroll us in the first 20 or so minutes with Frenkie on the pitch. Similar with Madrid, it's a question of how many press resilient players are there on the pitch (Fermin in and out) but also a matter of just how good Frenkie is in that segment of the game. Probably the best in the squad there. He'll definitely have a prominent role.

As for stealing the starting spot, we'll see. Pedri Fdj sounds the best on paper but there's an issue of chemistry and coordination. Pedri tends to occupy forward spaces and de Jong has that tendency to run with the ball forward. They'll need to coordinate there and also remains to be seen how some of his natural instincts come into play and if needed, can he suppress them . In this form, Pedri's too good of an all-arounder to be dropped, but Frenkie gives us a shit ton of flexibility no matter where he plays.

Good problem to have.

What is this obsession with selling him? What if he becomes a monster under flick? He has his uses in controlling tempo of the game

The biggest + to him being back is now we can rotate Martinez or Cubarsi with Garcia and give them a rest.

Wages, injuries, renewal being stalled.

I am not saying it is the right decision, but why people want that.
Wages are negotiable. Injuries, he is not actually injury prone. He just had successive major injuries, but was mostly injury free before that.

Maybe I missed something but he seemed to have acres of space on the ball so not sure about press resistency.

I said at HT while we struggled that we are improving in 2nd half. Madrid lost some steam and we were automatically more comfortable. Some players said so as well.

Don't want to be overly negative after great win. Best scenario, he renews, for a significantly lower salary and he stays fit. That's all.

You're welcome
no way he would not renew. Also 100% sure he'd do it against lower wages. There is no other team he'd want to play for. Don't think he enjoys playing in cold English weather either. And with how good of work coach is doing with team chances of him wanting to leave only dwindling.

If he renews on less money, he would be a good rotation piece to have, he serves his propose when games are open and we are dominant.

Could give usedul rest to some of our starters due to his ability to play DM and CM.

But anything over 10m is too much for what will basically be a bench/rotation player.

I'm not sure he will accept that, when we could be a week in week out starter else where.

He played a big part in a better and more controlled second half. The fitter he gets again, the more important he'll become. His skill limit is still very high and if Flick manages it for him to reach it again, we'll have much fun with Frenkie going forward.

But he needs to decide what to do this spring. The club is going to press him for an answer early summer either to extend with lower wages or to be sold. Then we'll see what's more important for him. I can't predict what he'll choose to be honest, since we also don't know how his real feelings towards our club are with all the public pressure last years started by the club to sell him. We'll see.
