If it's an option, I don't see how it can be obligatory?

There are 2 kind of options: mandatory or not. The 2nd is the most used.

Somehow I've always seen this being used. 'Obligatory buy-option', 'Obligatory option to buy' etc....

An option itself is a right, but not an obligation. Not sure if it's the footballing world playing with words and adopted this term or something else, but as far as I can remember, I've always read and heard it.

Obligatory signing clause would be more apt I guess.

I can't imagine this is the case, sadly. Roma should be smart enough to try him out for a season before they risk a permanent deal.
