24 - Thomas Vermaelen

don't like this one, one bit

40m for to good, but no exceptional CBs. but he is even more meh than the first

put another 10m on that and we could have got someone like a hummels/benatia
Yeah Roma and BVB were just begging us to bid 35m for their star CBs so they could get rid of them. FFS grow up teams don't just bend over backwards to sell their players to Barca. We have done great this summer window so instead of being a spoilt brat actually appreciate the players we have and don't undervalue the players just because they are ours now

I think a big consideration for the CBs going after this season was that they were comfortable in full back areas for a possible three man back line.

Dont think Benatia or Hummels have that.

Added to that they may have been impossible to get anyway.

Almost all the top clubs are after center backs ans Benatia/Hummels have gone nowhere yet.

Maybe because no one has put 40-50m euros on the table for them

It's true he's having a medical before the transfer is official. Never seen this before at Barça.

Unk? They always do medical tests before officially signing someone of course, why would they do them afterwards? You check what you buy BEFORE you buy it, in this case: him. The random tests done afterwards =/= the reported medical tests.

Nor does Piqué.

I am saying it looks as if they wanted to BRING IN cbs that could play in a back three and be comfortable when pulled out into full back areas.

You dont need every CB to be able to do that and in a back three Pique would most likely play in the middle.

let me ask you something think back 3 seasons would you have taken Miranda and Godin as a starting CB pair then? If no then it proves defense have more to do with tactics than personel (not that good players aren't important). You could have a backline of effing Maldini,Bekenbauer and Nesta and still be shit defensively if the tactics are wrong

Vermaelen isn't good as a LB... Maybe in a 3 man defence. He doesn't offer as much going forward as Alba and is worse defensively even. Atleast Alba is somewhat fast.

Finally a Belgian at FCB, awesome !

I get the scepticism about his transfer around here, he hasn't been up his usual standard the past 2 seasons. Yet, he was great for Arsenal his first couple of seasons there, considerably strengthening the backline. But then the injuries started and he wasn't helped by the great Koscielny-Mertesacker partnership either.

If he can stay fit he'll provide a great addition to our squad, I expect Matthieu to be a starter over him but Vermaelen will provide us with an excellent alternative. He has the same mentality as Puyol, he's a warrior and an excellent header. I expect him to be a succes at Barca when you consider his role here.

Why hasnt anyone put those offers on the table if they are worth that then?

because most top teams already have their defenses sorted, except us, so we should be the one bidding big to get the best, not trying to sign ok players on the "cheap"

Mathieu is alright because he gives us things we have needed for years, but this guy offers no unique ability he is just and ok defender and that's it, not even good enough to start for arsenal.

plus how many times are we going to sign arsenal players, given their track record with us,JEEEEZ

Vermaelen is miles ahead of Alba defensively, Alba has a huge weakness in his defending.

Of course Alba is the better suited left back for Barca for what he gives going forward and not saying Vermaelen is being bought to play LB anyway. He would maybe be 5th choice left back.

The top teams dont all have their defences sorted - PSG, Barca, Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City all started the summer looking for CBs. None of them have managed to sign Hummels/Benatia.

People who think Vermaelen will bench Alba at LB in a four man defence, what are you smoking? He couldn't bench Gibbs for crying out loud. At the national team he was tested several times at LB during the last years since Belgium lack a good natural left back and he failed miserably every time.

He said himself he doesn't think he's good at LB:

"I am fed up playing at left-back. I don't think I am good there - I want to achieve my highest level and I can't do that on the left.

I play there to help the team but it gives me no satisfaction as I can't reach my best standard."

psg didn't even try
man utd are trying to sign hummels
city could do without over bidding for them because they at least have a functioning defense, same for Chelsea

we on the other hand need as much people as we can get, and I'd rather sign a top class player for 50m (which none of these teams have big for those two) than 40 and these two, especially verms

I said he would most likely be 5th choice and IS NOT being signed to play left back ahead of Alba.
