24 - Thomas Vermaelen

I was excited when we bought him, simply because he's extremely mobile, good in 1v1s, excellent in the air, and a good distributer of the ball.

However, as said, his body is semi-functional at the best of times.

I hope to eventually see him and Mathieu be our starting CBs, with Masch fighting with Sergio for midfield.

I was with you until then.

Besides the fact that both are left footed which can be a problem, you'd have Pique/Masch? I'm taking into account we can't sign anybody in the near future.

Pique is a disaster waiting to happen when it comes to 1v1, and unforced errors. I haven't rated him since 2009, no matter how high the Spanish press do. His distribution is obviously his strongest asset, but at the end of the day, a CB is supposed to stop goals. If he played for any other team who don't have a tenth the possession we do, he wouldn't even be heard of, he's as average as they come imo.

Mascherano has proven again and again he's better in midfield. Although he does a great job in CB, his height will always be an issue, and a target for opposition. Mathieu & Healthy Thomas = the best balance of attributes.

Thoughts?

Pique has been phenomenal in the past few weeks. Back to Piquenbauer standard.

Mascherano can do the job in defence which, at the end of the day, is what matters.

I like Mathieu a lot. If we're playing a team that has a strong presence in the air he is a good option.

I also love Bartra. Like someone said in the other thread, he is better when we have the majority of the ball rather than in a fast paced game.

Vermaelen is good but he has to be fit. That is the main problem with him.

I think the best partnership varies from game to game. I don't feel we have a 'best partnership' as such. Some would say that's good because we can adapt to different teams but some would say that offers no stability. When Vermaelens fit we could always try out him and Mathieu but I don't think we would ever end up with them as a regular partnership.

So you just want to up and stick Mathieu and Vermaelen in there over Masch and Pique, it's not that simple. Mathieu, I'd rate him above average minus ton of big game experience less IQ/composure then Masch and Pique so no i'd think twice giving him the starting spot, especially in an important match. Vermaelen, idk shit about him except he is always broken, new to the club, and no, just no. He'd have to prove he is extremely worthy to make it to starting XI that quickly.

And where's the love for Pique gone.

I didn't suggest we do anything ''immediately'' my friend.

Was a long-term view.

I don't think I'll ever rate/trust Gerard however. Seen him make far too many errors in crucial games.

I just don't see Mathieu-Vermaelen being our starting CBs. Nor do I see Masch being better at DM over Busi, not as good on the ball and at the same time I don't see Masch not being in the starting XI somewhere he has become indispensable to the team, for his quality and leadership. So that narrows it down. Maybe GP3 can go down on the pecking order, but that would mean a huge drop in form which he is in great form and Vermaelen proving he is the beezneez.

While Pique has improved he is certainly not phenomenal. People are really going over board with praising him, he's still really prone to fucking up.

The error margin for defenders is so small, and they generally play to perfection. But one mistakes sticks in our minds more than the 100 times they did the right thing.

Zubidoo and the board have unreal foresight. The only reason they bought him, is to placate the fans this season, bemoan their bad luck on his injury, and then, next season, unveil him as their "new signing" again :zubi:
