6 - Gavi

Gavi and Pedri don't really play midfield in Xavi setup. I mean most the passes are between the CBs and then they kick it out wide to the wingers all game. Back in the day Xavi and Iniesta were getting 100 passes a game and proper controlling the game.

Gavi in Spain is much much better. Used properly. Xavi is literally going to go down with the ship playing the so called Barca way. He has a lower win rate than Koeman and nobody says anything because he is charismatic. Koeman would be getting ripped apart.

I agree. Gavi has looked fantastic for Spain. Enrique knows his shit. A great coach.
(Other than his eternal love for Busi, which seems to be every coaches poison).

Can't help when they play so high and are very far from each other.

I've said it for a while now. Great talent, but currently very overrated. Most of the time he runs around and does nothing, but because he has a couple of highlight reel moments and his age he gets away with consistently mediocre performances.

It's the same for Spain, but when you have a full stacked Spain squad and play against Armenia you might stand out more. Even against the better international sides he might stand out a bit more, but the quality of international football is low and even there he has almost zero end product or the ability to create chaos by driving the ball forward.

If Gavi is to ever start for us it won't be now, but likely 3-5 years from now if he's willing to stick around for that long.

It's hard to know which is which.

The theory says that you initially set up to occupy higher positions and let the ball get to you. So Busi at the base of the triangle and Gavi + Pedri higher up is normal.

But this is only the starting position, that you have to modify depending also on what the opponent does.

Say, if Busi can receive at DM, then there would be absolutely no point in Gavi and Pedri sitting next to him, because he is facing the goal and he can either claim space himself, or play a through ball, with the two interiors just making lateral movements to get in possession while maintaining a connection with the front 3. Absolutely no point ceding territorial gain in this instance and drop closer to your own goal. If anything, the rest of the players in the backline should push up as soon as the ball is progressing further up the pitch.

So, that part is spot on.

Where we lose structure is when the typical progression through the pivot is broken, which happens a lot vs faster and more grittier sides because A) our fullbacks aren't great, B) Busquets is old and slow and C) Some of our CBs are either slow or poor on the ball.

In these instances we are really not having the required weapons to get the ball to two high-positioned interiors and the front three. Resulting in garbage possession between the last 4-5 players and a lot of wasted time.

Now, it is probable that Pedri and Gavi do not understand the game well enough yet, or are not fast enough to switch between the two states. You have to squeeze and expand like a sponge, and to know when you should do one or the other, and also work on making the switch in a very fast way. Squeeze when pressed to provide options for players under pressure, and expand when the press is beat and you can receive in a higher position.

This is what Xavi was referring to after the game.

Lucho uses better.

Serghei tries to blame players quality now. Not totally wrong but Xavicross ball is just bigger problem.

You are right that International football is different than club football. But Spain don't play their midfield far from each other and barely have any connection. Their midfield is connected.

Same Gavi for Spain but he plays much better than himself for Barca, mainly because of Spain's setup.

You move up as a block and back as a block. Against Rayo we had two teams. The defence spearheaded by Busquets and the offense spearheaded by... Busquets. Then a big space in between that the mids and widemen could not enter.

You see the problem here.

Things changed with Frenkie because he played a different game, and in turn linked the offence and defence with his speed and runs.

Just read that he only has 18 passes and 28 touches last game. So basically invisible in midfield.

Our midfield was invisible. We rushed the ball from backline to wings... No buildup no player suitable to build up.

For a Xavi as a coach this is embracing stuff.

True. Gavi did not take single pass from defense.

I would love to see formation with 2 CDM's where one is Frenkie.

Teams are playing pressing on our field, amd we can not get the ball to attack.
Mainy because of declined alba, busi and playing without RB.

Also Gavi was invisible.
