At this point of his career, he has to manage his workload with due care. Set priorities.
Had he said, these are only irrelevant NL games, I'd be better off resting, the majority of Poland would have bashed him for the stance. They'd say, he's not worthy of the captain's band or wanted a to ban him from the NT completely.
I don't have a problem with that, but some think that avoiding to play for the NT is an affront and shame...with which, depending on circumstances, one may agree or disagree.

Paraphrasing, Lewandowski wants to play only in relevant games. I am certain that his back injury, which is likely, more or less, a muscular discomfort, would not be a problem, comes the Spring, and the WC qualifiers with it.

But I totally believe this club will waste 100 million on some flashy winger that doesn't perform in half of the matches while letting all the other clubs snatch up the few top strikers and goalkeepers.
